Hunger Hormones Affect Decision Making

Never make a decision when you are hungry. The hormone ghrelin - that is released before meals and known to increase appetite - has a negative effect on both decision making and impulse control. Such were the results of a recently conducted study at Sahlgrenska University.

The research is in Neuropsychopharmacology. (full open access)

Health, fitness and athletic performance all begin in the kitchen. Lean proteins and colorful and fiber-filled veggies can not only improve overall health, but also boost immune function and help you perform better both physically and mentally.

It's pretty common knowledge around my family and friends that I HATE to cook, but this entire counter full of food will be prepped into simple ready-to-go meals in less than 90 minutes, and that's 90 minutes for the whole week! That's less time than I usually spend in a week just trying to decide what take out place to order from. That pretty much puts the "but I don't have time" excuse out the window...
If you look at the variety here (everything from plain old chicken breasts to daikon radish) you can see that meal prep doesn't have to be the same boring thing every day. I'm going to get a whole bunch of different meals out of this even though they can be prepped in big quantity. That pretty much puts the "but it's boring" excuse out the window.

Finally, everything that is shown on this counter cost a total of $61 (and that's because I got a little crazy with the grape tomatoes - they were on sale and I'm going to dehydrate some of them for hiking later this summer). Considering I easily spend $20 on a single lunch from the hot foods section at Whole Foods, $15 at Chipotle and about the same even at Wendy's, I'm definitely far better off financially by heading to the local farmer's market and the produce section of the grocery store (even better when I'm picking up veggies from a local CFA). That pretty much puts the "it's too expensive to eat healthy" excuse out the window too.

So let's see...better health, a smaller waistline, better athletic performance, less time, good variety and less money... What's your excuse again?
