Shining a light on #employee #engagement problems can sometimes make matters worse. Read Ken Blanchard's article to find out why.
Finding it hard to generate positive engagement in your organisation? Maybe it's time to be more disciplined in your push for change. Employee engagement has set the HR world alight. While this is great, because it deserves to be highlighted, too many organisations pay only lip service to the issue and end up trying, but failing, to get the results they expect.

Do you have what it takes to be a director? Terry Booysen, CEO of the CGF Research Institute, explains what qualities directors need to fulfil their role effectively in our latest article on HR Pulse.
Time and again, business reports have revealed how many organisations have seen their demise as a result of their nonchalant board of directors. Yet in so many of these cases, the directors somehow seem to get off scot-free and stakeholders are left counting the costs. While there may be a variety of reasons for the collapse of organisations, one of the most often over-looked areas for an organisation's inability to perform optimally - and hence ...

Stop wasting time and start living!
As companies crack down on social media usage in the workplace, one aspect being overlooked is the fact that senior leaders are just as susceptible to the siren call of Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp updates as their junior colleagues, and that the impact of top-level time-wasting is potentially more serious for both the individual and the company. A recent survey showed that 89% of employees admitted to wasting time at work. But this phenomenon ...

Employees using smartphones at the office need to wise up or risk leaking valuable company information.
It seems that smartphones may not be the best devices to use for the workspace. According to Fin24, as long as a smartphone is turned on, it could be communicating with at least three different masters: the company that built it, the telephone company it connects to, and the developers of any third party applications you installed on the device - or were pre-installed before you bought it. It's important that companies educate their employees on ...

Should you consider coaching as a follow-up to a 'traditional' leadership training programme?
Organisations often underestimate the time and effort required to help leaders change. Coaching can be a great way of cementing leadership training and helping people adapt to new behaviours and coaching is most effective when you bring in the professionals to help.

Maha Atal says that single women are more likely to take home bigger #pay checks than married women are. She even goes as far as to say that #married men with stay-at-home wives are more likely to #discriminate against #workingwomen

Speculation is rife, with Grace Mugabe - the wife of Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe – taking a more active role in Zimbabwean politics, as to whether or not she will take over from her husband. Perhaps Mrs Mugabe is the solution that Zimbabwe needs to save their ailing economy, however this prompts the thought as to what the influence is of marriage in the workplace.

Businesses need reliable access to contingent labour that is scalable, qualified and capable...
In today's fast changing global business environment, adaptability and responsiveness have become non-negotiable components for the sustainable success of any organisation. What are the negative effects of social media for business?
With an increase in the use of social media, a joke doing the rounds tells the story that You Tube, Twitter and Facebook will migrate into one social media platform called YourTwitFace. Social media exploded and with 900 million Facebook users, 340 million tweets posted on Twitter and many more interaction on sites like Linkedin. Social media and the internet have literally taken over our lives. These days, people find it very difficult not to po...

It's time for organisations to re-evaluate e-learning and look at e-learning as a means to complement and support on-the-job training and classroom learning rather than as a standalone solution.
South African companies should not treat e-learning as a one-size-fits-all solution for training employees in new business systems and processes, but instead regard it as one tool of many for making their business strategy come to life.

Are advertising and marketing the solution to unemployment?
South Africa's marketing and advertising industry faces a shortage of a number of key skills, especially in the digital space. Yet, the country has a large pool of jobless young people hungry for employment opportunities. That means there is an excellent opportunity for South Africa's marketing and advertising sector to help itself and the broader economy by investing in skills development for the youth.

'Mutual interest' goes hand in hand with industrial action (strikes, lock-outs, etc). A work stoppage can only qualify as a protected strike if it relates to a matter of mutual interest between the employer and the employee.
‘Mutual interest’ is a loaded phrase and usually indicates that someone is about to change the game. Unfortunately, it is often used incorrectly so it is the interest of all to understand exactly what this phrase means.
