#LHC successfully completes its proton run for 2015, now preps to collide lead ions http://cern.ch/go/Wmg6
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) has successfully completed its planned proton run for 2015, delivering the equivalent of about 400 trillion (1012) proton-proton collisions – some 4 inverse femtobarns of data – to both the ATLAS and CMS experiments. LHCb and ALICE have also enjoyed successful data taking at lower collision rates.

MILKY WAY

We inhabit a universe
Where atoms are made in the centers of stars;
Where each second a thousand suns are born;
Where life is sparked by sunlight and lightning
In the airs and waters of youthful planets;
Where the raw material for biological evolution is
Sometimes made by the explosion of a star
Halfway across the Milky Way;
Where a thing as beautiful as a galaxy is
Formed a hundred billion times
A Cosmos of quasars and quarks,
Snowflakes and fireflies,
Where there may be black holes and
Other universe and extraterrestrial civilizations
whose radio messages are at this moment reaching the Earth.
How pallid by comparison are the pretensions
Of superstition and pseudoscience;
How important it is for us to pursue and understand science;
That characteristically  human endeavor.

GOOD NIGHT WORLD

Spiral Galaxy M96 from Hubble

Dust lanes seem to swirl around the core of Messier 96 in this colorful, detailed portrait of the center of a beautiful island universe. Of course M96 is a spiral galaxy, and counting the faint arms extending beyond the brighter central region, it spans 100 thousand light-years or so, making it about the size of our own Milky Way. M96, also known as NGC 3368, is known to be about 35 million light-years distant and a dominant member of the Leo I galaxy group. The featured image was taken by the Hubble Space Telescope. The reason for M96's asymmetry is unclear -- it could have arisen from gravitational interactions with other Leo I group galaxies, but the lack of an intra-group diffuse glow seems to indicate few recent interactions. Galaxies far in the background can be found by examining the edges of the picture.

Holmes Beach Sandpiper

I just got back from the beach where I walked along the water at dusk. At one point I stood there fascinated at the challenge from a sandpiper. Apparently I was on his stretch of beach as he worked the waves. The motion is cause by moving my camera sideways during a long exposure. The piper and couple is a normal exposure. This is a technique that I’m experimenting with, that is taking multiple exposures of the same scene and blending them in different ways. There are all kinds of possibilities and today this is what I ended up with. Hopefully the piper ended up with something too.
