Well-directed investment in the kind of scientific research that involves volunteers ought to be a part of our broader conversations about social democracy. The knowledge gained is well worth the price, and it puts money into the hands of people who need it (it can furthermore do better at this if doing so becomes part of the mandate for the programs).

Granted, the peril of this kind of thinking is that it's the poor who wind up assuming the risks of the experiments, but that can be (and for the most part has been) minimized through the adoption of strong standards

Regardless of who placed those bombs, why they did it, or who else might have been involved, I can tell you that the story of April 15th, 2013 is the story of the futility of terrorism. Not because I share the certainty of some that those involved will meet justice; at this point, that cannot be known. But a community does not withstand terror by punishing its perpetrators. We withstand terror by refusing to be terrorized. By not allowing a freak occurrence inflicted upon us by cowards and thugs to change us or the way we live our lives. Terrorism is rare, it is difficult, and it is the work of inferior minds. Its success relies entirely upon our own co-operation

The Yemeni President expressed his condolences for the children killed in Connecticut, and this is reported without comment by MSNBC's Alex Witt.

In December 2009, the most respected public institution in this country asked him to take the blame for them when an air strike killed 21 children in Yemen, and in that moment of need he was as much a friend as he was in this.

I have plenty of ideas about gun control (none of which can do anything more than reduce the incidence of violence, and few of which I would even endorse without far more careful study of the potential impact), and a good sense that we'd all be served by universal access to mental healthcare (though if the lesson here is that we need to get people into treatment because they might kill us if they don't, we'll be certain to fuck it up). I don't know what can be learned from the shootings in Connecticut along those lines, and at this stage, you don't either. We should be talking about those things, but only because we already should have been.

What I do know is that there is a shameful and reckless nihilism towards the value of human life that lives in our policy-whether it be or the inadequacy of the social safety net, the ease at which guns move from the legal to the illegal markets, the incentives created by the War on Drugs that drive demand for those weapons, or the civilians killed in our name abroad- but which is also made evident by what we choose to give a shit about. Multiple murders in small towns and suburbs get wall to wall coverage, while the kids in the inner cities who get gunned down every day only get mentioned in passing each time something deemed worthy of this kind of attention. When our military or our paramilitary kill children, it's kept as quiet as possible. But we still know about it and we still pay for it.

A line I've seen repeated in regards to gun control is "the time isn't now, it was yesterday." There's a hell of a lot more in our lives and in our society to which that applies.

What a Slinky Knows

" From anti-tank weaponry, to what would happen if the sun suddenly disappeared, Steve and and our astronomical friend Neil deGrasse Tyson help us unravel the implications of the "wonderful toy." The bottom of the Slinky, friends, is us!"
