During the 40th anniversary of the Society for Caribbean Studies (SCS), Audley C. Chambers, Ph.D., '86, associate professor of Music, and Carmiele Wilkerson, Ph.D., '90, associate professor of English, presented individual papers at the SCS annual conference in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, on July 6-9, 2016. Hosted by the University of Newcastle, the conference is organized by the SCS and the Centre for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS). Dr. Chambers presented his ongoing work on Manuscript 258 and the development of the symphony orchestra in 19th century Jamaica. Dr. Wilkerson presented her research on novels by the British author Caryl Phillips. Their research was supported by the Faculty Development Grant Program at Oakwood University. At the end of the conference, Dr. Chambers was elected to be a member of the SCS general committee for the 2016-2017 academic year.
