"Though crime rates continue their steady decline in Canada—We’ve been led to believe, through rhetoric and relentless fear mongering, that without the use of mass incarceration, our cities and communities will no longer be safe. The result—our jails are now stuffed full of people awaiting trials, not convicted, and in most immigration instances, without criminal charge.

Just as importantly as the growing financial burden to taxpayers associated with the increasing overuse of incarceration in Canada, is the social and human costs associated with this ill-fated course. While I believe the conditions in our jails today come as a direct result of our justice policies and the general lack of compassion held by our federal government towards people. I also feel it to be reflective of a general lack of understanding of the very real “justice” issues at hand by the Canadian public. I sincerely believe that if most Canadians could somehow experience just a few hours in one of our remand centers today, they would find it appalling, disturbing and frankly shameful. Here’s a parting thought on that note, if it can happen to so many others, it can happen to you." LSC -

“It is said that no one truly knows a nation until one has been inside its jails. A nation should not be judged by how it treats its highest citizens, but its lowest ones.”
~Nelson Mandela

I am passionate about human/prisoner rights, and sadly aware on a first hand basis how just how important the need has become for a private, independent source of genuine advocacy due to the present climate within the Canadian justice and penal systems.
