Van Horn has become our go-to spot for a fantastic, reasonably priced dinner. The North Carolina-style sandwiches are obviously the draw, with the fried chicken breast sandwich (with coleslaw and pickles) being the main attraction. Even a non-chicken lover (such as my wife, Maura) might be floored. The pulled pork, catfish, and BLP (bacon, lettuce, pimiento) sandwiches are all excellent, too. Occasionally, though, VH will feature a killer non-sandwich special, my favorite being a skirt steak, which was one of the best steaks I have had in New York (unexpected from a sandwich shop). Other pluses: mac 'n cheese, hush puppies, a good selection of local beer on tap, and outdoor seating in the back garden. The atmosphere and design are pretty solid, starting with the jumbo louvers in the front window, an urban update on the shutters of a Southern home.

This is a sandwich shop after my own heart. Owner Jacob Van Horn is from my hometown of Chapel Hill, NC, and the entire staff is really friendly, just like back home (the menu is a taste of home, too). My favorite sandwiches are the BLP (bacon, lettuce, pimento cheese) and the catfish. The beet salad is solid, too. Bottom line: whenever I miss home, I go to Van Horn.

From the moment I sat down, I was smitten with this wonderful Brooklyn gem - the outdoor seating was great. The stew at @vanhornbrooklyn was awesome, but after my girl friend's fried chicken came, I regretted not getting it - it was the best fried chicken I've tasted, and I'm from Kentucky, so that's saying a lot.

Paul, thanks for reviewing us. I'm happy to hear you're a fan of our shop. The stew is great, but the chicken sandwiches are tough to beat. Great hearing it from someone from Kentucky. Congrats on the championship this year. Maybe the Heels will have better luck next year. I appreciate your recommendation and hope to welcome you back soon. -Jacob, Owner

The sandwiches are very good. This place is not for the veg crowd as most of the menu has meat. The pulled pork and the mac and cheese are my personal favorites. Overall this is a very comfortable place to grab lunch.

The Chicken was excellent, and you can share if you don't have too big an appetite, which helps to tolerate the $12 charge. The PLT (blt with cheese) is rich and delicious. If you don't mind the prices, and a small menu, the food is very high quality.

Plop, thanks for reviewing us. I'm glad you enjoyed your chicken sandwich and BLP. It's great to hear you were impressed with their quality. I'm looking forward to welcoming you back again. -Jacob, Owner

Delicious! I had an amazing chicken pot pie, which was a dinner special, and my wife tried the brunswick stew. We both left with a sense of euphoria. Very few things on this menu are priced over $10. It would be hard to find a better deal in the neighborhood.

Becky, thanks for your review. I'm glad you enjoyed your chicken pot pie and the brunswick stew. A sense of euphoria is exactly what we want our guests to leave with... and full stomachs! I appreciate your recommendation and look forward to welcoming you back again. -Jacob, Owner
