Reposting a recent piece that's again timely "...history's lethally impersonal forces, mass displacement, arbitrary borders, marching armies, and totalitarian dictatorships cannot fully erase the private joys and sorrows of individual lives."

My review of two fascinating books appears in tomorrow's Wall Street Journal, but it's been posted online tonight!

"Here’s some disquieting news to consider as you hand out candy to trick-or-treaters this evening: Ghosts and monsters are real, and they can’t be defeated with garlic, crucifixes, chain saws or proton packs."

I'm very proud to be among the organizers of this effort:
We are writers, academics, critics, historians, and authors who have voted for Republican presidents and candidates. Given our choices in the presidential election, we believe that Donald Trump is the candidate most dangerous to our nation’s founding ideals. He is a unique and dire threat to the political principles, liberties, and cultural values of justice, fairness, honesty, and decency we have long defended. We urge you to vote, as we will, for someone else.

I'm proud to share this profile I wrote of Chris Wilson – once a prisoner serving a life sentence, now an entrepreneur on a mission in Baltimore. I've been lucky to see him at work and learn about his background. I hope this article helps more people learn about him. Please read and share if so inclined!

You get to listen in on a delightful conversation with +Olivia O of Strangers With Style and +Maggie Cawley of Maggie Maps and Boomerang Geospatial. +Sharon Paley and I had a lot of fun talking with these guys about arts, culture, tech, mapping the world and tiny Baltimore corners of it, and a host of newsy things.

My new personal site (very beta). Needs a lot more, but it is surprising how much time it takes to get the foundation set up and functional.
