It has been 3 years since the first excursion navigated downstream the Napo River and ventured into this outstanding jungle.
It is thanks to our guest and this captivating rainforest that today the M/V ANAKONDA AMAZON CRUISES is winner of the World Travel Award as South America's Leading Boutique Cruise of 2016.
We are proud of this achievement but more than that we are proud of working with a select group of people whose efforts, commitment and passion are symbolized in this recognition.
Conservation is what we stand for and this is why we are going for another challenge; the creation of a wildlife conservation project that has a tremendous amount of potential and will hopefully increase the number of endangered and vulnerable species living in our beautiful rainforest. ‪#‎WorldTravelAwards‬ ‪#‎WTA2016‬ ‪#‎greendestination‬ #AllyouneedisEcuador

"Let´s release a little Charapita into the wild"
The Amazon basin is the home of one of the largest South American river turtles.
The Charapas or yellow spotted side-neck turtles get their name from their inability to pull their heads into their shells; instead, they bend it sideways to tuck their heads under their shells, leaving a part exposed. (WSC)
The Charapas lay their eggs in river banks during the dry season making them very easy to find.
In Ecuador these eggs are illegally harvested for human consumption and can be bought in local markets. This practice has put the survival of this species in danger.
According to the IUCN Red list, these unusual turtles fall under a “vulnerable” classification.
Their main threats in addition to the marketing of their eggs are the illegal capture and trade of this species that are often commercialized in black markets as pets.
Advantage Travel in collaboration with local communities have started the Charapas project which has the main purpose of protecting and repopulating this endemic species.
The project focuses on controlled breeding, which is possible through the protection of river banks where turtles lay their eggs.
This practice enables us to take care of eggs and hatchlings until they are old enough to be released into the wild.

Potoos are essentially solitary creatures, although pairs of potoos may forage within a few dozen metres of one another. They are also highly restricted nesters. Instead of building a nest, they find a branch or stub with a suitable depression or crevice of just the right size to accommodate the single egg they lay. The egg is chalky white, marked with brown and gray, and is incubated by both parents for 30–35 days. (www.britannica.com) #wildlifeconservation #nature #EcuadorianAmazonRainforest

- See more at: http://www.mantarayalodge.com/las-ballenas-jorobadas-nacen-en-manabi/#sthash.VCE0FzQb.dpuf
