The January 11th meeting of The VGS Irish Genealogy SIG was well attended. SIG Leader Tom Voyles gave an excellent presentation on "The History of Naturalization" using documents of his Irish immigrant relatives as examples. He showed us a range of documents including Ships Passenger Lists, Passport Applications, Declarations of Intent to Become a Citizen, Final Granting of Citizenship, Including Oath of Allegiance, and Certificate of Arrival. We received in in-depth overview of the history of US immigration naturalization from 1790 to the present.

Membership Meeting - May 25, 2016
May is usually the lowest attended meetings of the year since so many of our members have gone north and returned home for the summer. However, the 135 in attendance today were presented with an interesting methodology on how guest speaker Hank de Cillia went about researching his family tree.

He had 13 suggestions for "Finding Your Roots" with number one being: See yourself as gathering information to "tell your family story". It's much more rewarding than simply "collecting data". Become a family history detective.

His handout will be available for a limited time in the "Members Only" section of our website. Text and photos by John De Angelo

Thanks to Beth Emery of the New England Historic Genealogical Society, Rhonda R. McClure, Genealogist, Anna Todd, Researcher, and the rest of their American Ancestors team for "NEHGS Comes to Florida!" This special one day seminar was held April 1, 2016 at the Waterfront Inn in the Villages, with over 80 people in attendance. In addition to quite a few VGS members, many people traveled from the Orlando and Tampa Bay Areas to attend. A large portion of the audience were already NEHGS members prior to the meeting.
While we were inside listening to the speakers, Dragon Boat Teams made up of residents of The Villages were practicing outside on Lake Sumter.
