Last November an Islamic throng in the Punjab province of Pakistan instigated the brutal murder of a Christian couple, Shahzad and Shama Masih, by burning them in a brick kiln.  The crowd of Muslims reacted to the accusations and commands coming from the local mosque’s loudspeakers claiming that Shama had defiled the Quran.

In an all-too similar and frightening manner last month an angry mob of hundreds of Muslims attacked an impoverished Christian family in a village near Farooqabad. The mob was acting on the orders of a local Islamic leader, who had announced from his mosque that Owais Qamar and his family were guilty of desecrating the Quran. The mob dragged him, his wife Rukhsana and two other female relatives into the town square and began beating them and rubbing their faces with dirt.

Then Senior Superintendent of Police Sohail Chattha arrived on the scene. The Muslim clerics demanded that he arrest the Christians for blasphemy against Islam. Instead, Chattha brought a case against the clerics and the members of the mob. He also enabled the Christian family to relocate to a safer area.

Superintendent Chattha later told Christian news agency Morning Star News that he had ordered the officers to protect the family even if it meant opening fire on the angry Muslim mob.  The mob, Chattha said, meant to kill them and cared little for understanding the facts of this case , “and all because they are poor, illiterate people who didn’t realize that a line from the Quran was written on a sheet they had purchased.”

Praise God that on July 3rd, Pakistani police even arrested one of the Muslim clerics who had incited the violence. In Muslim-majority Pakistan, it is unusual for police to act swiftly or justly when violence against Christians is involved. The correspondent in Pakistan for Morning Star News reported, “Such police intervention is relatively unusual in Pakistan, where mobs furious over alleged blasphemy are often left to wreak havoc.”

Praise God for this exception!

Pray –

8/8 – Pray that Qamar’s family and the grieving children of Shazad and Shama Masih will experience deep in their hearts the peace and joy that come only from our Lord.

8/9 – Praise the Lord for using the timely arrival of the Police Superintendent to protect Qamar and his family from further injustice.  Pray that his just actions are a sign that Jehovah, not Allah, is drawing Chattha to Himself.

8/10 – The Police Superintendent turned Qamar’s family over to Christian elders for protection, but he advised them not to return to the village for fear of their lives.  Ask God to fill this family with hope in Him, and that in the midst of this trial Christ would “dwell in their hearts through faith, being rooted and grounded in love” (Ephesians 3:17).

8/11 – Pray that the Holy Spirit will use the testimony of Qamar’s family to reach Muslims for Christ.

8/12 – Ask God to meet the physical and spiritual needs of Qamar’s family and surround them with Christian fellowship.

8/13 – Praise God for the assistance of the Police Superintendent in the safe relocation of Qamar’s family.

8/14 – Pray that the arrest of the Muslim cleric who instigated the violence against Qamar and his family will cause others to refrain from bringing false witness and harm against Pakistani Christians.

8/15 – Pray that Qamar’s family and the children of martyred Shazad and Shama Masih will put on the full armor of God daily and continue to walk in close fellowship with Christ.

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”   – Romans 15:13
