This Northshore program will recognize five North Shore commercial institutions that have been in continuous operation for 50 years or longer. In 1954 James “Jim” F. Turner opened Turner Fisheries in Boston, in 1989 becoming J. Turner Seafood in Gloucester.

Ten companies have been nominated. Current online voting is through Sunday, June 15th to narrow to 5 winners. The top 5 will be announced in Northshore’s October issue.

We are pleased and grateful that the service experience, the quality of the seafood we prepare for you, and our market take-home customers, has earned your support without which, this nomination couldn’t result. Thank You!

We welcome your recognition of our seafood, services and most importantly
our prized staff, through your vote.

Thanks… From All of Us at Turner’s Seafood

Under Appreciated, Underutilized, Not At Turner’s
Executive Chef Yale Woodson–Salem & Chef Jaime Aguilar–Melrose love treating our diners to new seafood taste experiences, creating full-flavor dishes with underutilized seafood – red fish, cusk, skate wing (pictured) razor clams and more. Typically we sell-out. Check with us to see what’s in our kitchen.

We just moved into town and had heard/read plenty of praise regarding Turner's. I decided to try it for lunch to celebrate mine & my wife's wedding anniversary. I went in early to make a reservation and to ask if they would hold onto a dozen roses I had bought for my wife. First person I met was Joe Turner who not only took my reservation, but asked his hostess to place the roses in a vase they had and then have them placed on the table prior to our arrival. Needless to say that was very nice of them to do and my wife was impressed. As for the food, we couldn't have been more pleased. Our son joined my wife and I for lunch and we all started with the lobster bisque. In a word, outstanding!. Full of flavor and nice chunks of fresh lobster meat. For our main courses, my wife had the Black & Blue Shrimp which she found to be perfectly cooked & seasoned. The blue cheese risotto cake, we all sampled from her plate, was excellent. My son opted for the Shrimp Po Boy and was not disappointed. Again everything was cooked perfectly and the bread which makes the Po Boy what it is was fresh and flavorful. As for me, I chose one of the daily specials... the Shrimp Taco Salad. The shell was fresh, crisp, with good flavor and not at all greasy. It was packed full of greens and other delicious ingredients and topped with grilled shrimp. Very satisfying. Finally, for desert our wonderful waitress suggested the apple crisp. Once again, we were not disappointed. I think it is safe to say that Turner's Seafood Grill & Market has won over yet three more customers that will be returning again and again.

Looked like a good option but NEVER for takeout lunch. If you have time to waste, plan TWO hours ahead. They are SLOW and hope that I might have been better served as a sit down than takeout.

Excellent dining!! Good clam chowder and other seafoods. Had a decent GLUTEN free menu for a friend of mine. Quiet main street with coffee and pastry shop nearby. Would go there again.

The seafood is outstanding. As an experience, it is fun to eat here and then purchase ingredients behind the glass to take home for the future. Everything looks fresh and of high quality. As a restaurant, I had the steamers and they were exquisite. However, I didn't like what they did with their pasta dishes, probably because it overwhelmed the flavor and texture of the seafood. I will be coming back to try more dishes where the seafood is the main ingredient on my fork and to sample more of their raw bar, which I am sensing is where they excel at.

We've come here a few times for dinner, and we've purchased fish from their little market as well. The fish was fresh and reasonably priced, though it can't really compare when other places have sales. For dinner, the food was pretty good, and the service was solid. One time for dinner, my stuffed shrimp was not cooked, and the manager took it away immediately, apologized, brought two more back and offered free dessert. Look, it happens. But the way they handled it was excellent and we barely even noticed. At another restaurant, we had beer/wine spilled all over us, and we did not have anything comped - simply a dry cleaning reimbursement form. The free dessert and follow up from the manager was much appreciated and a nice gesture.

Neither my boyfriend nor I are great lovers of seafood, but we have found that the fish & chips here are the best either of us has ever had. Surprisingly, they do the best burgers in Melrose, as well. Service is great. The manager always stops by our table to check that all is to our satisfaction. Overall atmosphere is lively, buy not overwhelming--there is just a positive spirit about this place.
