Despite some significant opposition, financial backing for part of the US's first high-speed rail line has been approved by the Californian senate.

As much as we love the rather slow Amtrak services found running in the country, a high-speed service would surely offer massive benefits to the state.

What do you think?

The popularity of green travel is increasing each year. For some, though, booking a flight is often seen to be the easier or cheaper choice when planning a trip away. Overland travel doesn’t have to be expensive, however, and some trips by road, rail or sea can be cheaper and even quicker than the same journey by plane.

So what can we do to cut down on the costs of flightless travel?

- Travel Overnight
- Use Railcards (in some cases)
- Use Local Services
- Book at the Right Time

The Dutch Flyer is one of our favourite overland journeys, travelling from London to Amsterdam either during the day or overnight via Harwich and Hoek van Holland.

Travelling overnight is the best option (although not the cheapest), as it means you arrive in Amsterdam right at the start of the day.

Prices for this journey are remarkably affordable:

Daytime from London to Amsterdam: £39 (one-way) or £78 (return)
Night-time (incl. cabin) from London to Amsterdam: £68 (one-way) or £136 (return)

Children travel for half the adult price.
