At the zendo where I sometimes group meditate, www.MiddlewayZen.org, we change the Heart Sutra on Thursday mornings and sometimes on other days as well.

Avalokiteshvara is my favorite, I think its because of her hands.

                The Heart of Prajna Paramita Sutra
     Namo fundamental teacher Sakyamuni Buddha.

Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara,
while deeply immersed in prajna paramita,
clearly perceived the empty nature of the five skandhas,
and transcended all suffering.

Sariputra!  Form is not different from emptiness,
emptiness is not different from form.
Form is emptiness, emptiness is form.
So it is with feeling, conception, volition, and consciousness.

Sariputra!  All dharmas are empty in character;
neither arising nor ceasing,
neither impure or pure,
neither increasing nor decreasing.

Therefore, in emptiness, there is no form;
there is no feeling, conception, volition, or consciousness;
no eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, or mind;
no form, sound, smell, taste, touch, or dharmas;
no realm of vision, and so forth,
up to no realm of mind-consciousness;
no ignorance or ending of ignorance, and so forth,
up to no aging and death or ending of aging and death.

There is no suffering, no cause, no extinction, no path.
There is no wisdom and no attainment.
There is nothing to be attained.

By way of prajna paramita,
the bodhisattva's mind is free from hindrances.
With no hindrances, there is no fear;
freed from all distortion and delusion,
ultimate nirvana is reached.
By way of prajna paramita,
Buddhas of the past, present, and future,
attain anuttara-samyak-sambodhi.

Therefore, prajna paramita
is the great powerful mantra,
the great enlightening mantra,
the supreme and peerless mantra.
It can remove all suffering.
This is the truth beyond all doubt.
And the prajna paramita mantra is spoken thus:

Om, Gate Gate Paragate Parasamgate Bodhi Svaha.

from Nepal.  N.S. 769 (1648)

One of the most important gifts from Shakyamuni Buddha to his community was the teaching of the methodology of attainment to others. Acting in the guru-disciple tradition of ancient Indic philosophers and teachers, he accepted disciples soon after he attained enlightenment, and taught them the perfections of the path to enlightenment through the stories of his previous lives. This painting depicts Shakyamuni giving a teaching to the patrons of this work, the Kansakar family of Kathmandu, who are clearly identified in the Newar script at the bottom of the painting. The registers around the central scene depict 46 birth stories (jataka) of Shakyamuni’s previous lives in which he cultivated the perfected qualities of a being destined for enlightenment (Bodhisattva).

Bad Boys II: Re-reviewed.

Michael Bay proves himself one of the great satirists of cinema in this over the top send-up of American action movies. Bay riffs on the war on drugs, American militarism and empire, a paramilitary domestic police force, and jock culture, the latent homoerotic tensions of jock culture are the narrative thread tying the piece together.

The work is underrated as progressive social commentary. Before the stereotype changing Brokeback Mountain, Bad Boys, with its aggressive undertones of a homosexual love story between two strong men, stood at the very forefront of 'its ok, dude attitude' that is beginning to normalize in American jock culture as gay men come out in locker rooms in college and professional athletics.

In the main, however, Bad Boys 2 is a biting commentary with acid drenched seethe dripping from the margins of every frame. The world is a mad house, and the only viable solution is arming psychotic men with guns.

Police and drug dealers dump bodies all over the streets and through the buildings of Miami as they tear through in high pursuit.

Mike and Martin's relationship is on the rocks as Martin can no longer take Mike's intensity and insatiable need for intimacy expressed in his compulsion to share excitement with Martin. Martin is thinking of asking for a separation from his partner, Mike.

Martin has his own problems, he is getting burned out. The PTSD is beginning to mess with his mind and life. Martin can no longer become intimate with his wife, the growing chasm between the two men is evident as Mike can relate to none of Martin's issues and can only put the pedal to the metal in response. Martin's intimacy issue is ironically resolved when Martin eats a drug called ecstasy, a drug that restores his feelings and ability to perform, and is also the target of Mike's psychotic obsession, escalating the tension between the two men to international levels.

The pair resolve this potentially devastating relationship crisis by leading an illegal military invasion of Cuba with plans to assassinate a Cuban national. The plan works, though the added complication of the presence and killing of Cuban soldiers in the pitched battle turns their invasion into a hot war.

The fallout from this development results in a mad dash through Cuban slums for Guantanamo military base, which later became a symbol of U.S. hegemony during the Iraq-Afgan wars. This is an uncanny narrative choice by Bay that also has the virtue of giving this work even more depth and meaning atop the layers of irony and commentary already present.

The final scene has taken on a second life of interpretation after Abu Ghraib, as Guantanamo moved from Nicholson's 'A Few Good Men' association to, right or wrong, we are kidnapping, torturing, imprisoning and liquidating people.

The closing kiss for big Mike as Martin looks on in a stunned daze is no surprise, (how else could it end?) The beyond absurd and almost too intense background renders a last, garishly violent chiaroscuro impression. The hero and token attractive woman embrace in a land mine field next to a shot out Humvee, barbwire and a man with his brain's blown out right after literally running over a third world slum with a fleet of military vehicles. This turned out to be Bay's high exit note from artistic credibility as he turned to formulaic schlock in the Transformers franchise.

One wonders what other heights or depths such a promising visionary as Bay could have gone to had he not cashed out.

(Joe Pantolini gives an understated and spare performance as a thoroughly defeated supervisor, who can barely conceal his cynicism at the plausibility of his role in that he is able to reign Mike in.)

No, its weird.
Yes, true to some extent for everything that happens for quite some time, including the spikes of birth defects and cancers as a consequence of poisoning the country with DU.
