I do, by the way, want to salute all the many men and women who fought and suffered for many years to bring us to this historic moment in the United States where gay marriage is now universal.
Moreso, I want to highlight this moment as a victory for peace and reason. There were no riots for marriage equality. There were no terrorists. There were no wars. We got here by winning hearts and minds--plus a crap ton of legal and political battles.
I will not tell you that there is never a just cause for violence, but the sword is not a thing to take lightly. Violence breeds contempt far too easily, as it coerces rather than persuades. It is a tool of life and death, a tool of last resorts, and also a tool of tyranny.
We did the right thing. We did it the right way. And I am proud to be an American today.
