As much as legalization advocates like to claim that marijuana impairment is not as severe as alcohol's, it's pretty obvious that any amount of impairment is unacceptable when it comes to driving a car. The other point to note is that drunk driving in Colorado has not decreased since legalization, while marijuana-positive drivers in accidents have become more common. It's time for a massive outreach program by law enforcement focusing on prevention.

When passenger trains are incapable of handling their typical routes, that's a signal that both funding and planning are seriously lacking. It should be no surprise that the northeast suffers from harsh winters, yet trains will break down if exposed to the snow. Federal funding for Amtrak should be sufficient for, and contingent upon, buying suitable engines for expected conditions.
Even more than snow---which can be plowed, after all---extremely cold temperatures can wreak havoc on a railroad.

The plans for a major part of the #BayTrail  across the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge are in development, but there are many misinformed opponents who threaten to derail the project. To make matters worse, a concurrent plan to add a third traffic lane to the lower level has stirred up deep emotions about urbanization and new development.
Seeking to alleviate traffic congestion in Marin County, the Bay Area Toll Authority (BATA) is currently evaluating adding a third eastbound lane during peak hours and a bidirectional bicycle and pedestrian path on the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge. As the Bay Area (including Marin County) ...

It may seem obvious that the lower gasoline prices dive, the more people will be on the roads. The less obvious result is that roads will be become much less safe for everyone using them. Simply by having more people on the road, the number of accidents will increase, but driver behavior is also affected. The cheaper the gas, the more erratic drivers become.

Helmet laws (whether for motorcycles or bicycles) have been shown to reduce the number of people on bikes. By reducing the number of people out on the streets, we also reduce the number of accidents, which is a very unproductive way of improving safety. Of course, the safety benefits of a helmet are such that not wearing one is tantamount to lunacy, but should helmet laws be pushed on everyone?
Mandatory helmet laws for adults are the two-wheeled equivalent of abortion or gun laws. Few issues are more controversial in the two-wheeled world.

Even with the leaps and bounds that automotive safety has made in the the past 20 years, car accidents are still the biggest danger for teens. So when teaching a teen to drive, it is understandable to want to create the safest conditions for them, whether it be by control or monitoring.

Racial and economic disparities in transportation planning are so clear they can quite literally be seen on a map. Privileged suburban areas benefit from seclusion, but the residents still need to get to work in the city every morning. What has resulted are massive, polluting, and neighborhood destroying highways being laid down through the most impoverished inner city areas. It's time something was done in the name of transportation equality, and protected bike lanes are an excellent place to start.
Michael Andersen blogs for The Green Lane Project, a PeopleForBikes program that helps U.S. cities build better bike lanes to create low-stress streets. Almost as soon as PeopleForBikes selected its first six Green Lane Project focus cities, we started hearing from their staffers that they ...

Every conversation we have about car "accidents" leads us to separate people's actions from the consequences. The same goes for the dehumanization of describing a "car" hitting a "pedestrian" instead of talking about the person driving and person walking.
Safety advocates have a clear answer to when a crash is not a car "accident" — nearly always, and certainly any time it involved drinking and driving or distracted..

The next decade of development in the Bay Area will be based around booming populations and safer, more reliable transportation. A holistic approach to getting people around will be the only way to avoid massive gridlock and billions lost in economic growth.

"Express toll lanes, modern trains, buses that run faster and more frequently, protected bike lane networks and communities designed to give people more options to get around are the future."
The Bay Area is not likely to see a boom in infrastructure. The goal is to build on our current system.

What's important to note is that this is a rare instance where the law is keeping up with technology. Driverless cars are still very much in early development stages, yet there are already proactive measures by governments to allow much needed testing.
But even Google admits the technology still has a ways to go.

Victim blaming and a failure by police to follow department policy are truly to blame for the ongoing game of pedestrian whack-a-mole. Pointing to "bad behavior" instead of what is an institutional epidemic makes it easy stall progress and divert attention away from potential solutions.

"Three motorcyclists are killed every day from multi-vehicle crashes at intersections in the U.S."

A big thank you to Allstate for the years-long campaign for motorcyclist safety, as bikers do not have the crumple zones that are so helpful in reducing motor vehicle accident injuries. Drivers who are not accustomed to sharing the road with motorcycles need to be reminded to look for bikes since their visual footprint is so much smaller. Hopefully these signs will increase awareness and save lives.
Share this Article Tweet Print Email a Friend Go Back Print this page By Troy Siahaan December 15, 2014 0 One of the leading causes of motorcyclist fatalities occurs when a motorcycle crashes with another vehicle at an intersection. This is a preventable occurrence, and for the last year Allstate Insurance has been doing its part to help eliminate these crashes through its advocacy campaign, the Once is Never Enough (O.N.E.) pr...
