Today's an exciting day at Matterport! After 3 years of development and a yearlong beta program, we're finally opening up our product to general sales! https://vimeo.com/88954819  We picked an ambitious and technically difficult goal - creating the next form of visual media - that took a good amount of work to get right. There's a lot of talk going around about how there's not much real innovation in Silicon Valley anymore, and we think such talk is rather silly!  https://matterport.com/order/

Some fun adventures from last weekend -- packing calcium carbide into a snowball and then setting it on fire.  Calcium carbide emits acetylene gas when it comes in contact with water.  Flaming snowballs

I took a Matterport camera to Burning Man and made lots of 3D models!  Here are some of them:

Phage Dome -- this is in my camp.  We had talks there every night.  Explore at https://matterport.herokuapp.com/meshes/XNjTKG

PhotoChapel: According to someone I met while capturing the model, PhotoChapel is a memorial to a DPW volunteer who died in a car crash last year.  See the model at https://matterport.herokuapp.com/meshes/iNOzhL (note that it's mildly NSFW - there's some artistic nudity)

The Space Camp hexa-hexayurt adjoining Future Camp:  This is five hexayurts arranged around a central hexayurt gathering area. Each hexayurt slept 2-3. The owners of the other four hexayurts weren't up for having their messes scanned, so I just scanned the central one and one of the side ones. Note that I cut a hole in the doorway (virtually) so the user can walk through it. See the model at https://matterport.herokuapp.com/meshes/bFrvNy

Church trap:  This one was a real challenge. It was so popular that it was always crowded, even at dawn. I eventually decided to scan while it was full of people performing and watching. The net effect of this is a bit like the 3D equivalent of a long exposure crowd shot. Various body parts of various people are stranded in space or broken apart like a Cubist painting, but for the most part, the multiple scans made the people disappear. Amusingly enough, the moon landing actually was faked.  CBS News Coverage of Apollo 11 - Moon Landing  The major TV networks knew that viewers would need some visuals to go with the abstract NASA chatter, so they created some special effects to illustrate what was going on.  However, when the landing didn't go quite as planned, the simulation got out of sync with the actual landing.  Some background on what went wrong on the way down:  Apollo 11, The True Story of the Lunar Landing

Matterport + Oculus Rift is a sensory experience unlike any other, and it's a taste of what the future holds. If you happen to be in my neighborhood and want to give this a try, let me know. You can also try it at home if you have your own Rift.  Download our demos at tinyurl.com/matterport-oculus
