Before you leave, prepare your house to be empty. While we're sure you all have your routines, consider adding these to your preparations: Drain your pipes to avoid a burst. Unplug your landline phone so it doesn't disturb your neighbors. Take the opportunity to clean out your fridge and freezer, unplug them, and leave them open to avoid mold.

Who doesn't remember hearing about the Boston Tea Party? Our forefathers, in their first act of defiance to oppression, threw the king's tea into Boston Harbor. The city still remembers this historic event every Fourth of July with a huge celebration. Come see fireworks with accompaniment from the Boston Pops orchestra at the Charles River, or explore the harbor and all of its fascinating tall ships on a dinner cruise. Cast your cares overboard and have some fun!

If you're feeling particularly patriotic on the Fourth (aren't we all?), maybe you should head up to Washington, D.C. for the “A Capitol Fourth” festival. The city pulls out all of the stops, beginning with a parade at the National Mall, followed by a performance by the National Symphony Orchestra, culminating in a fireworks spectacular that lights up the monuments and just might bring a tear to your eye.

If you're in the mood for some history this Fourth of July, head to Philadelphia, the city where the Declaration of Independence was signed. After watching a wonderful parade in the historic district, watch a fireworks show over the Museum of Art. Come a few days early or a few days late to tour some historic sites, like Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell. Gain a real appreciation for the holiday by seeing where it all happened.

If you like food, then there are few places better to be than Chicago the first few week of July. On the Fourth, the Navy Pier Freedom Fest is the place to be. Enjoy a stunning fireworks display from the top of a building overlooking Lake Michigan—the whole shebang set to symphonic melodies. Four days later, the Taste of Chicago festival begins. Stick around and sample all of the scrumptious fare the Windy City has to offer.
