Oh boy - there goes my chances of getting anything done for the next couple of weeks . . . I love reading old historical papers from prominent scientists.

You've seen, then, the article on tuning forks from1880? Good luck with your presentations in San Diego... you'll be having better weather there, I'm sure.

trying to skim through an old paper (from 1874) in German - the first paper to suggest using a viscous damping force for mechanical oscillators. Digital scans of old journals are great!

Nice to contact with you, pro. Russell. My name is Phonon Chen in Guangzhou city, China. I'm a postgraduate student studying psychoacoustics, electroacoustics, and indoor sound environment. Shall we share information to each other?

doesn't want to know how I much time I would waste trying to find answers to complicated questions if I didn't have "the Google" available to help me quickly find a solution.

That's what president Bush called it once in an interview. "The internets" and "the Google". lol

Science is so much fun! Even more so when a real-life event (Cincinnati Reds Todd Frazier hits a home run while the bat is slipping out of his hands) turns into a small research project for a paper - collaborating with physics of baseball expert Dr. Alan Nathan (who has all of the 3-D ball tracking data to track the exact motion of the bat and ball) to study the impact and the vibration of the bat (my area of expertise) to show that the hands don't matter when it comes to the impact between baseball bat and ball.

Two of my favorites: Mathematica and NeXT computers . . . I didn't know that Steve Jobs was the one who suggested the name "Mathematica" and that he was also responsible for the bracket-shaped cells in notebooks. The fact that Mathematica was bundled with NeXT computers was one of the key reasons I purchased a NeXTstation while in graduate school. And the NeXTstep operating system is the main reason I'm now a Mac OS X user.

of course, with your tendency for OS/2 and my preference for NeXT, neither of us were very much in line with the mainstream of Windows and Apple.

Has anyone tried using Hangouts with Extras? (so you can share screens, and access Google.docs, and use a scratch pad? I tried to set it up but got sent to a help screen with blank pages. What good is having a help button for Google+ Hangouts when none of the help entries have any text to go along with them? Finding the text "the answer you are looking for is not available" doesn't' actually help me.

Bernd joined for a few minutes after you left, and he was able to edit (add text and draw) on a document I had shared to the screen. It looks pretty powerful.

I wonder if Google+ is going to implement that face recognition software that Facebook has when you post a photo album. Kind of freaky to see names automatically tagged with photos.

perhaps you have prevented people who aren't your friends from seeing your pictures or your tags - but I can still tag you in any picture I post whether or not you are in the picture, and because you are my friend any new picture that I post that has your face in it is automatically recognized as you.

I guess I do not at all understand what is so great about Google+

At the present moment, I have blocked more people than I have added to circles . . . people who I have absolutely no idea who they are - but who have for some unknown reason added me to their circles. WHY??? And my entire Home Stream is filled with posts and pictures and graphs posted by the same two people.

18 million members and my feed is dominated by two people, while dozens more that I do not know have added me to their circles. That makes no sense. I want a social network so that I can keep in touch with my friends and family - not so that I can read garbage from people I don't know and will never meet in real life.

The phrases they chose to emphasize are interesting. They could have emphasized the bits "You retain copyright and any other rights you already hold in Content which you submit, post or display on or through, the Services." and "This license is for the sole purpose of enabling Google to display...". These seem reasonable to me (as do the other selection of licenses that were presented). The only thing that I really don't like is the perpetual part, which means I can't delete my account and be guaranteed that everything I've ever posted removed. However, that shouldn't be a surprise to anyone.... The discussion below is actually somewhat informative and points out some of this out.

Story
Introduction
I'm a teacher (professor) of acoustics - the study of sound and vibration.  I love figuring out the physics of how something works, figuring out how to explain the physics and mathematics in a way that others can understand and grasp it, and then sharing it.

I like to explore the acoustic and vibrational characteristics of sports equipment and musical instruments.
