Grand Marshall of the 2017 Columbus Day Parade and Chairman of Barnes & Noble, Len Riggio has established a large scholarship fund for Italian-American students, a part of which will be set aside for those who wish to study writing.

Let's celebrate how far Italian-Americans have come through hard work and responsibility, eschewing victimization despite the hurdles placed before them. During the period of discrimination, statues of famous Italians, like Christopher Columbus, were erected to remind Americans about the contributions of Italians to world culture. At this year's Columbus Day Parade, Len Riggio invited one-hundred Italian-American authors to accompany him underscoring the contributions of Italian-American authors to our culture. I was proud to be one of the marchers.

Great memories. Proud to have been among one-hundred Italian American authors invited by Len Riggio, Chairman of Barnes & Noble, to march in the 2017 Manhattan Columbus Day Parade.

The December issue of Fra Noi, the journal of record for the Italian-American Community of Chicagoland for more than three decades featured Birds of Passage, an Italian Immigrant Coming of Age Story on page 106.

"What turns the gentle mean and the mean brutal? The thirst for wealth? The demand for respect? Vying for a woman? Birds of Passage recalls the Italian immigrant experience at the turn of the twentieth-century when New York’s streets were paved with violence and disappointment.

In 1905, Leonardo leaves Naples to seek his fortune. Carlo committed murder and escapes. Azzura is American of Italian parents. She’s ambitious but strictly controlled by her mother. Leonardo and Carlo compete for her affection.

Azzura, Leonardo, and Carlo confront con men, Tammany Hall politicians, the longshoreman’s union, Camorra clans, Black Hand extortion, and the Tombs prison.

Part thriller, part love story, part coming-of-age narrative, Birds of Passage reaches beyond the typical mafia novel."
