If you were put in charge of the NY Times, what would you do to turn the place around? I'm honestly not sure anyone has the answers.
Outgunned by speedy internet rivals, NY Times puts boss's son on committee to spend 6 months coming up with suggestions. Great.

Or maybe Google has become Paul Allen -- the rich middle-aged guy who has too much money and no idea what to do with it, so he just buys everything.
Google+ boss Vic Gundotra is leaving, while the "moonshots" keep piling up.

Apple's head of marketing won't spring for social media monitoring tools, because who needs those right? Then suddenly Apple discovers, belatedly, what consumers want. Whoops.

If you've spent your career in marketing, and you're not scared shitless right now, you should be.
If you want to stay in marketing, you need to totally "reinvent" yourself. Who doesn't love being told that?

Private coaches work 1-on-1 with sales reps and teach them how to close, how to pitch, how to overcome their hangups. It's expensive, but apparently it works.
Athletes hire coaches to help them improve or get them out of a slump. Why shouldn't salespeople do the same?

Just writing this post, I destroyed a part of my soul. Dear God make it stop.

Three lessons you can learn from Katie Cotton, Apple's departing PR dominatrix.
Sometimes the best way to get good press is to treat reporters like the filthy scum they truly are.

What's it like to endure the wrath of the Internet? Not so bad, says 22-year-old Mary McCoy.
Mary McCoy's cringe-inducing song about social media marketing became a viral hit this week.

Nick Denton, Henry Blodget, Kara Swisher, Jason Pontin, Quentin Hardy: an all-star cast weighs in on whether journalists should obsess over their traffic stats. Or even see them at all.
Most journalists don't like chasing traffic -- or at least, they won't admit to it. Is that snobbery, arrogance, or a smart business decision?

Try to be likable is Rule #1. Not a big shock for normal people, but remember these rules were created for HBS students!

Ever dealt with a bad sales rep? Here's why. Most have no training, and no clue how to sell.
Without the right personality traits, and some formal training, you're pretty much doomed to fail.

I would tend to agree. Many sales people in B2B markets get promoted into sales simply because they have an outgoing personality or they have delivered good work in the internal technical support team.

Even future rock stars get rejected. Keep this letter in mind next time one of your ideas gets shot down.
Everyone gets rejected. Even rock stars. The ones who succeed are the ones who are crazy enough or stubborn enough not to take "no" for an answer.

Introduction
I'm a marketing fellow at HubSpot, in Cambridge, Mass., and a recovering tech journalist whose dues were paid at Forbes, Newsweek and various other tech publications. I also created a blog called The Secret Diary of Steve Jobs which caused a bit of a ruckus at one point and led me to write a book and a cable TV show that sadly never made it to air. I've published three books, none of them bestsellers. I got an MFA in Creative Writing at the University of Michigan, taught there a little bit after graduation, and remain a fan of the Maize and Blue.
