Reported rise in ketamine misuse: Addaction Press Release

Today (16th November), the charity Drugscope has reported a rise in the number of people seeking help for problems with ketamine.

Simon Antrobus, Chief Executive of Addaction says:

"Drugscope is right to draw attention to this rise in ketamine use. It chimes with Addaction's own experiences and concerns.

Between 2010 and 2011, Addaction saw a 68 per cent rise in enquiries from people using ketamine, up from 151 cases to 254. The drug had significantly affected their health, with many reporting bladder problems and blood in their urine, and with some even forming a psychological attachment to the drug".

Addaction Press Release

Despite an ageing population and growing alcohol consumption among older drinkers, only five dedicated treatment centres in the UK are working with those who become addicted. In time for Alcohol Awareness Week (14-20th November), Addaction is calling for this problem to be addressed.

What is more, factors such as retirement, bereavement, divorce and children moving away are leaving older drinkers isolated, and with a greater chance of any alcohol problem going unnoticed.
