We Need Batteries! (Electrification of Everything)
So close, but so far away In the past few months I took a couple of risky jumps into the world of high powered battery equipment. My first was a Ryobi Snowblower and the second Ryobi Lawn Mower (Heck I already had the batteries, why not!). Using this high p...

Ryobi 40V Lawn Mower Review
Again with the utopian energy dream!? Well, yes, I must admit that I am truly excited about the battery/electric revolution. To my consternation it has been taking much longer than I expected… I always repeat the refrain “Don’t worry, the electric revolutio...

I have been messing around with the Moto E and it is a very solid phone. For the $119 price tag you can't go wrong. Small compact phone with everything you need from Android. This is a great transition device for family members who are still sporting the flip phone.

Pebble Smart Watch - Still Relevant Post Apple Watch?
Even though Apple has been playing catch up lately everyone still seems to think that when Apple enters a new market, they must be the first ones to solve that problem. A key example is when Apple allowed 3rd party developers the opportunity to use their ow...

Ryobi Battery Powered Snow-blower Review (Does it Blow?)
How did I get here? About 7 years ago, while working on a GreenerThinking.com article, I purchased a battery powered lawn mower. I thought, “You know, these things are starting to come out, it must be usable…” Well, my hypothesis was wrong… The battery took...

Happy (extraordinarily late) New Year!

Gratuitous Tech has been mainly a labor of tech addiction. My first pictures were taken with a Phone camera a couple of years ago. My next self imposed rule was to not open the gadgets that I purchased until ample pictures were taken. I don't know about you but, my ability to keep a brand new object in a box is not very strong...

As part of this process I learned that my picture taking setup left a lot to be desired. You may notice some of our backdrops may include my hands or wooden floors. It didn't change the content but with lessons learned, I will do better. +William Devins is the art director of this project. He has been pushing us to do better and we will.

Over the past year we went from backdrops that included my hand and knee, to the deck, to white poster board in the corner of a room, to additional lighting and a more complex poster board backdrop that wasn't on the floor. Kneeling is a pain in the butt. This year we will be getting a proper backdrop that will allow us to take wider shots and get more detail in the products. Last year I also invested in a new camera that really helps with the quality and works at a much better quality and many light levels. Another accomplishment over the past year was setting up our new webpage www.gratuitoustech.com

Here is to another great year!

Jay Bird - Blue Buds X (Sings the Blues) Review
This isn’t the greatest way to start an article, I know that, but this was not one of my favorite articles to write. The Jay Bird seems to meet all of my bullet points: music is awesome, wireless stuff is awesome, built in rechargeable batteries are awesome...

Although large I will be interested to see the price and capabilities on this phone. Paired with Razers new game streaming app, this could be pretty neat.

Experiments in wireless charging. Added some neodymium magnets to a board then added wireless charging. Once the proof of concept works I can make it it look nice... or I may just go with the rustic naked look.
