Who loves shopping for fresh ingredients at the local markets?
There is something special I feel every time I head off to the market to buy some deliciously fresh ingredients. Hearing the fruit and vegetable vendors tendering for your attention to let you know they have the best produce. The other shoppers walking around with their little trolleys looking for the best and freshest produce to take home. I just feel like a child in a candy store when I think of these experiences.
I constantly enjoy the thrill of fresh market shopping around the world, and it never gets boring. But one thing can become a little painful, the huge amount of people traffic and locations of everything, which can become very stressful!
But rest assure, I do have a simple system that I am happy to share which makes it so much easier to negotiate and depart with the best and freshest ingredients available.
Here are my little tips that always see me through a good session of fresh market shopping.
1. Write a list of what you need to buy. Forearmed is forewarned!
2. This is my favourite part of market shopping. I call it R&D time! I find the section I a looking for, EG if I need fruit and vegetables, or fish and so on. Lets say were looking for Fruit and Veg on this trip. So I find that section and start to walk up and down every isle and scan the produce. I also make a mental note of what I need and prices, quality, etc. Another good idea is to mark the isle number next to the item you liked best. EG, Asparagus was super fresh and inviting in Isle G, Etc. Once I have done my scan, and I am satisfied where I am going to get the best products from, I begin my next vital step of mapping.
3. Ok now I have a visual map of where I am going to buy all my goods from, I look at my list and try group items together. EG, I might have found 8 of my 30 items on Isle D and so on. This way I can manage my time effectively and begin shopping systematically without stress.
4. Now I have all my ingredients, I can begin to head off to the next section on my shopping list. EG, Fish or meat and begin the process all over again.
It’s not a rocket science system, but it surely does take out of my elevated stress of wondering where everything is and getting overwhelmed with the large environment.
Happy fresh food shopping
