New world record for a work of art.
L'Homme qui marche I by Alberto Giacometti, 1960
Sold For: £65 million at Sotheby's London (February 3, 2010 Impressionist and Modern Art Evening Sale)
Fetching $104.3 million, Giacometti's iconic 6-foot tall sculpture set a new world record price for a work of art at auction (previously held by Picasso's Garçon à la pipe, which sold for $104.2 million in 2004). The cast bronze sculpture of a wiry male figure was the first of two versions made for an outdoor installation at the Chase Manhattan Plaza but never completed. A cast of the sculpture was exhibited at the Venice Biennale in 1962.

Artist: A. ROQUIN Size: 23 7/8 x 38 1/2 in./61 x 97.7 cm Publimp. Nadal, Paris The image of the Queen Mary and the Queen Elizabeth surging their way out to sea from the steel-and-concrete majesty of New York reflects much of the elegance that White Star prided itself on ? namely, speed and style. The handsome Art Deco design, with its restrained geometries, does almost as much to inspire awe as do the jewels of their line.
Cunard / White Star. ca. 1946 Estimated Price: $3,000 - $4,000
