NEW FULL DAY TOUR from ANTIGUA or QUETZALTENANGO or PANAJACHEL

Cotzumalguapa culture archeological tour

This tour leaves from either Antigua, Quetzaltenango or PANAJACHEL with certified guide, bilingual and much known with the area and the Cotzumalguapa culture.

The prehispanic city of Cotzumalguapa (According to the Geographical Dictionary of Guatemala: River of the opossums i.e. Didelphis Marsupialis) is considered to have been the largest city in the pacific coast of Guatemala. Archeological evidence shows it exerted influence in a radius of at least 50 kilometers from its epicenter composed of several acropolis connected by extensive cobblestone causeways and bridges that hanged over nearby rivers. Since the discovery of the site around 1863, many people showed interest for its monumental art, particularly Germans who, back then, had a well-established colony in Guatemala due to their pioneering of the coffee industry in this country. Thus, many of the most beautiful Cotzumalguapa sculptures were cut and thinned in order to be shipped off via the sea port of San Jose to be part of the collection of the Ethnographic museum of Berlin that was created just around the same time.
Between 1884 and 1888 several monuments were rooted up, careless from their original context and now are displayed far away from their place of origin. But Cotzumalguapa would become celebrated in the Mesoamerican Archeology, according to Oswaldo Chinchilla Mazariegos, when German linguist and ethnographer Walter Lehman read the date on famous stela 1 from the acropolis of el Baul and interpreted it as 29 AD in the long count system, the earliest date ever registered on any monument of the area, which spurred a reaction from credited Mayanist J. Erick S. Thompson who undertook excavations in the place, partially to refute Lehman’s date.  Perhaps the most important contribution of Thompson was his conclusion that the largest occupation of the city was in the Late Classic Period (600-900 D.C.) and his was the first serious scrutiny of the Cotzumalguapa writing system.
Since Thompson’s time, the archeological site has suffered the perpetual exposition to the natural elements, extensive agriculture urban expansion and the constant siege of pedestrians who out of curiosity or worst, neglect or pure vandalism have left their trace on the surface of the sculpted face of many monuments that lay fallow with little or no attention from government authorities.
Also, along the road to Cotzumalguapa, you will enjoy the majestic view of many Volcanoes and witness the industrial development provoked by the rich alluvial soil of the pacific coast of Guatemala. All this offers our customers a diaspora of interesting topics that will make this tour a very interesting and unforgettable experience.
The “Cotzumalguapa Archeological tour” takes place in the municipality of Santa Lucia Cotzumalguapa, in the department of Escuintla on the pacific plains of Guatemala. From Antigua 50 miles (80 kms), from Quetzaltenango about 80 miles one way (134 kms) and from Panajachel at the Lake Atitlan about 60 miles away (90 kms)
It has been designed for adventurous people of all ages either young or adult and it can be done in two ways.
(1)    Performing a hike of 2 or 3 hours through sugar cane plantations, locating dispersed monuments and interpreting their iconography, as well as the main acropolis of this city that flourished in the Late Classic period of the Mayan Civilization. This option is for people who likes to combine history and archeology tourism with physical activity.
(2)    -In automobile taking short walks to and from the monuments which reduces time at least one hour. This option is for people interested in history and archeology of ancient cultures who are not willing to a large expedition of physical energy.  More info or bookings > info@adrenalinatours.com
