Thursday is the International Day of Non-Violence which commemorates the philosophy of the late Mahatma Gandhi.

Through his example, Gandhi proved that peaceful protests could accomplish much more than military aggression.

"At this time of increased sectarian violence and the wanton destruction of cultural sites and heritage, it is timely to recall Gandhi’s call for peace and reconciliation, and his warning that, 'An eye for an eye ends up making the whole world blind,'" said Ban Ki-moon.

In El Salvador, almost 6% of the population is indigenous and historically has suffered discrimination and oppression. In June this year, however, the Legislative Assembly voted to reform the country’s Constitution offering recognition of its indigenous peoples and a commitment to the adoption of policies to safeguard their ethnic and cultural identities: http://sm.ohchr.org/1qDrmLV
