I'm happy to be participating in "Authors for the Philippines" - a way to help raise money for the victims of the heartbreaking destruction on those beautiful islands. You can bid for a signed copy of Island Practice - and also donations from many other writers and editors. It's one small way to help. Thanks to Candy Gourlay for helping put all of this together.

The earliest known signs of autism may be found in babies as young as two-to-six months old. Fascinating and significant research.
Researchers using eye-tracking technology found that 3-year-olds diagnosed with autism looked less at people’s eyes when they were babies than children who did not develop autism.

So, on the same day that Washington Post had that minor bit of news that it was being bought by Jeff Bezos, it also had this much more important story: five recommended summer reads, including Island Practice! And both of them have Amazon connections  Coincidence? http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/five-health-and-science-books-to-turbocharge-your-summer/2013/08/05/c6cee130-ddd7-11e2-b797-cbd4cb13f9c6_story.html

Nice to keep getting reviews of Island Practice a year after publication! And this one is great because it comes from Dr. Elaine Schattner, a physician and writer. http://www.medicallessons.net/2013/07/summer-reading-island-practice-about-a-rare-physician-on-nantucket/

Get birth control pills without a doctor's prescription? Coming soon in California, Oregon, maybe elsewhere.
Starting sometime in the next few months, California and Oregon will allow women to get a prescription directly from a pharmacist, a move that advocates hope becomes a national model.

It was a great pleasure to spend time with Martin Cruz Smith and his wife Emily for this piece in which he revealed his long struggle with Parkinson's disease. He was eloquent, funny, humble, and honest.
Deep brain stimulation therapy has offered hope to Martin Cruz Smith, the acclaimed author of taut thrillers like “Gorky Park,” who hid his diagnosis of Parkinson’s for years, fearing judgment and pity.

Trying to think of thematically relevant tunes to play at our August 21 "Island Jazz" gig on Nantucket. Since Island Practice's Dr. Tim Lepore will be there - and since he is a surgeon and tick expert, among other things - I'm toying with "I've Got You Under My Skin." Maybe Dr. L could play a solo on one of his hand-carved obsidian scalpels. https://www.facebook.com/events/541038999283217/

A cool storytelling event this Friday evening in New York City: I've been invited to join some fascinating folks (authors, a playwright, a veterinarian and, um, a "former brothel owner") to tell an animal-related story. Thinking about one of the great Dr. Lepore animal anecdotes in Island Practice...

Doctors are starting to pay more attention to patients who say they are experiencing cognitive problems but do not yet show a measurable decline.
