From urban farming to a sustainable clothing line to a bakery that empowers youth, Memorial University students recently took top honours in a competition focused on making the world a better place.

The Social Innovation Challenge provides startup funding for social enterprises that have positive social, cultural or environmental impact while also achieving financial sustainability.

Greenspace Urban Farms won first place, led by mechanical engineering student Bennett Newhook; Seaside Apparel and business student Trevor Bessette took second place; and Sweet Change and education student Kristian Butt nabbed third place.

It took a car accident for a Bangladeshi PhD student to realize that she didn’t have to be alone.

An executive-level banker at a major financial institution in Chattogram, Bishakha Mazumdar suddenly found herself unemployed and house-bound when she moved to Canada, without the support of friends and family and a new culture and new language.

Through these and other challenges, Ms. Mazumdar learned that it's OK to reach out and ask for help.

"The car accident reminded me that every day I’m living is one day of my life that should be lived properly.”

We're excited to welcome many new graduates to the #MUNBusiness alumni family this week. Among them will be mother-daughter duo Colleen McConnell and Alexandra Vaughan-Jackson, who will receive BBA and B.Comm. (Co-op) degrees, respectively.

“Mom has put in so much work into getting this degree and I am so proud of her. With us graduating at the same time, it’s like a culmination of both of our hard work towards our degrees, and I cannot wait,” said Ms. Vaughan-Jackson.

Welcome to the MUNBusiness alumni family! #MUNGrad18

Determined. Resourceful. Persuasive.

From an early age, Chrissy Rossiter demonstrated these and other entrepreneurial qualities.

“I’ve always been resourceful in a way. I might have owned, say, an MP3 player and went on Kijiji and traded it for a bunch of different things, something of higher value that I really wanted,” she said. “I didn’t really grow up with a whole lot of money, but this is what provided me with the determination and persuasion skills that I have today.”

Enactus Memorial won a competition focused on financial literacy but finished out of the finals at the national championship last week.

The team of undergraduate students from #Memorial University won the 2018 Capital One Financial Education Challenge, placed second in the Scotiabank Youth Empowerment Challenge and was second runner-up in the TD Entrepreneurship Challenge.

“Our team has been fortunate enough to win a couple of times in a row now, but we also remember the times we haven’t,” said Taylor Young, president, Enactus Memorial.

"It sounds like a cliché, but I think we’ve realized through this process that you learn more from the years you don’t win than the years that you do."

A partnership at #Memorial University is offering graduate students the chance to make a difference and gain tangible work experience by helping to grow and support social enterprises.

The School of Graduate Studies (SGS) and the Centre for Social Enterprise (CSE) launched a pilot project in January that placed five graduate students from different disciplines in semester-long work placements at social enterprises in St. John’s.

“Our students often say that they would like to be integrated into the community more and given the opportunity to make contacts and gain practical experience,” said Dr. Aimée Surprenant, dean of the School of Graduate Studies.

“Our core mission is to contribute to the province and this is one way of accomplishing that goal.”

The so-called #Oscar curse inspired #MUNBusiness researcher Dr. Alyson Byrne to examine the marital relationships between female #CEOs and their husbands who have lower status employment.

Dr. Byrne and her co-author, Dr. Julian Barling of Queen's University, interviewed over 200 women and discovered many of them were dissatisfied in their marriages - unless they felt supported at home by their husbands doing tangible work such as laundry, housework and taking care of the children.

"We are socialized to think that men are the higher breadwinners," Byrne said. "But be realistic about the changing roles in society."

#Commerce alumna Emily Bland started Project #Sucseed when she was a member of Enactus Memorial. Now, she's taken it over as a self-sustaining, full-scale #business.

"I thought I had my whole life figured out. But SucSeed grew a lot quicker than any of us ever expected so we reached a point where we’ve outgrown being run by a volunteer group of students," she says in this article from #Entrevestor.
