Hey, it's my birthday! Like I've done for the last couple of years, I ask my friends to make a donation to an LGBT charity on the occasion of my birthday (in lieu of getting me a gift). Not just that, I will match the first $2,500 in donations!

This year, I am fundraising for the Ali Forney Center (http://www.aliforneycenter.org/), the largest LGBT community center helping LGBT homeless youth in the United States. If you'd like to make my birthday extra special, please make a donation here: https://www.razoo.com/story/Borja-35-Birthday

Hive mind: We have a new faculty member in the CS department who asked us about good sites to find contract programmers. His needs are very specific and require a pretty strong background (the project involves "cleaning up and extending a LLVM-based compiler for a C-like quantum computing language") and he wants to cast a wider net than advertising on our departmental job board (which targets mostly students).

Does anyone have suggestions for sites where one would advertise for this? He would ideally like to find someone in the Chicago area, so sites focused on connecting with local developers (instead of connecting with developers around the world who can work remotely) would be preferable.

This just arrived. Because it's never too soon to start working on making next year's CMSC 23310 - Advanced Distributed Systems an even bigger Lamport-fest than it already is.

So yesterday was my last Networks lecture and, like last year, I prepared a selection of the best commit messages written by students throughout the quarter: http://www.slideshare.net/bsotomay/uchicago-cmsc-23300-the-best-commit-messages-of-2015

So, for the last couple of years, I've been working on a number of programming assignments for CS Systems courses (Networks, Databases, etc.) that have been (I think) pretty successful here at UChicago, and I've finally gotten around to putting them on a public-facing website.

Caveat: I've only fully migrated the documentation for one of the projects (chiTCP). The rest of the projects include links to our internal documentation (like assignment handouts).

The North American Invitational Programming Contest (NAIPC) is happening again this year!

Unfortunately, we were unable to raise enough sponsorship funds to hold it as an on-site contest like we have done for the last three years, and we will instead be holding it as an online contest this year.

More details at http://naipc.uchicago.edu/2015
