I grew up in NYC, & made my 1st pilgrimage here when confirmed at age 13. I was blown away by its immensity, but painfully aware that the slums of Harlem surround it. I'm an organist whose soul was stirred, and lifted to new heights by the magnificent organ, with its 'state trumpet en chamade'! I am also a student of architecture; i remain appalled that such an iconic monument has 2 distinctly different styles: Roman, & Gothic. How could anyone in his right mind have let that happen? Halfway thru construction the builder was replaced. Rather than find one willing to continue in the style w/ which *half* the cathedral had already been built... they hired one who refused to do so! It could become far worse if the crystal tower is ever given the go-ahead. In a room within the cathedral is a model of the proposed structure. When apart from the Cathedral Church it is grand, but atop... it is an abomination! Perhaps they have already dropped those plans, but when i was last there the tower was still on their 'to-do' list.

I love the church and brought lots of friends visiting here before to see the great Gothic architecture and beautiful outdoor garden. But since the church leased the land to the developer who is building a condo which will block north wall of the church ruin along 113 th St. I was very disappoointed and so did many thousands of locals and visitors to the church.

It's weird to "rate" such a place, but this cathedral is truely magnificent. One of my favorite places in new york.

Begun in 1892, and not yet fully completed, the seat of the Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of New York is one of the world's largest Neo-Gothic cathedrals; a grand Europeanesque stone affair, with stained glass galore and art ranging from Raphael tapestries to a Keith Haring painting. The adjacent Peace Garden is one of the most whimsical places in the city.

Cathedral is becoming a family tradition: my son first, and now my grand children. What a great institution. All cultures and religions receive the greatest respect. The Curriculum is out in front of best practices, and the after school activities are super with a wide variety of offerings from team sports to chess, film making, and Shakespeare to name a few. The school takes full educational advantage of the Cathedral and its grounds. Did I mention the Peacocks? A truly cosmopolitan experience exceeding usual New York educational fare.

Although I have toured many of the Cathedrals of the United Kingdom and Europe there is something deeply spiritual about St John the unfinished. It is so massive and authentically medieval Gothic that it feels like it was a part of a major city of the 13th or 14 Century instead on Manhattan Island. There is also something for me at least of the feeling of the presence of eternal in the midst of all that is always in a state of flux in the great city of New York Although living now in the San Francisco Bay area I still think of "the city" as being New York and its massive immense Cathedral church.

Walked in with a friend of mine and got to see some art displayed for a tsunami that have happened at the time. By the time we were done looking at the art a mand had walked up to us that worked there and offered to give us a tour. He was so kind and it was nice to see someone so passionate share their love. It's a breath-taking place to visit.
