You have to try the Cypress Grill on the banks of the Roanoke River in eastern NC near Jamesville. They are only open 4 months a year when the herring are running. You can get cremated herring-that is really fried to a crisp. Described by the Road Food team as a "Fishing Shack" this restaurant has been in the New York Times-more impressive to me is that it has survived all the hurricanes we have here in NC. Be sure to try the Chocolate Pie.

Been eating here my whole life. Everyone needs to try it at least once. Good food, atmosphere and a wonderful family ran local eatery. You might want to call ahead and make sure they have what you want if you might want Rock stew or herring roe as those items are served on alternating days.
