Cans for a Cure is tomorrow!

Every October, the Q Morning Show on 97.9FM undertakes a unique and environmentally-conscious approach to fighting cancer by hosting the largest bottle drive in Maine: Cans for a Cure. Lori, Jeff, and Lou of the WJBQ - Q97.9 morning squad will set up camp once again at the Maine Mall to collect donations in the form of redeemable cans and bottles starting tomorrow, October 10 through Friday, October 12.

Proceeds will benefit the Dempsey Centers in South Portland, Maine, which provides a personalized, holistic, and integrated approach to cancer prevention and education for families throughout Maine.

If you’d like to pledge to Cans for a Cure, recycling your empty bottles and cans with CLYNK is one of the easiest ways to participate all year round. Simply log in to your CLYNK account online, click Donate, and search for Cans for a Cure. You can donate straight from your CLYNK balance!

We’d like to share some heartwarming news from our press event yesterday morning at Hannaford Maine Mall. Larry Bowden has been CLYNKing since we first opened for business in 2006. Larry, together with his good friend and Kora Shriner, Leo Verrill, collected can tabs back in the day for neighboring schools. Years in, they realized that they could raise even more by redeeming containers. This is a story of friendship — two guys selflessly raising money for others.

Over the course of a decade, Larry collected over 340,000 containers and raised $17,000 simply by CLYNKing cans and bottles. Yesterday, he donated the entire sum to the Shriners Hospitals for Children, in honor of his late friend, Leo.

Inspired by Larry’s dedication, CLYNK and Hannaford Supermarkets will match up to $7,500 in donations to the Shriners Hospitals for Children - Springfield through October 15. Participants can donate money directly from a CLYNK account online. Community members can also donate directly to CLYNK Cans for Kids.

"In Oregon, where an existing deposit law was updated in April 2017 to increase the deposit from the original 1970s-era rate of 5¢ to 10¢, the redemption rate increased as well in the following months, from 64% to 82%."
