When Dale said we were going to a French Bistro on the corner of Bowery and Houston Street, I rolled my eyes…… Dale doesn't generally like French Bistros and I don't like to fight traffic with a half hour $18 taxi ride for that kind of dinner……..but, ok, our dinner guest lives in the neighborhood and the restaurant got a good review in the NY Times (generally another reason not to go). Cherche Midi was a pleasant surprise.........a large, square room designed to look the way it should (light of hand)...........a pleasant greeting from the folks in charge..........a nice table spaced so there's action but not close enough to make new friends………and you can hear each other talking even though the restaurant is designed with hard surfaces. Across the street from Whole Foods, the clientele looks it...........that's a good thing. Staff if plentiful, young, attractive and on the ball. Appetizers were terrific. Entrees workmanlike. If we lived in the area, we'd come all the's that kind of restaurant. As we don't, it's on the list when having dinner with people who do.

Great bistro food. Attentive staff. Perhaps too much shabby-chic interiors, but the perfect food makes you forget all that...

Come for the amazing food, stay for the people watching - this place is full of beautiful people. We're still dreaming about the prime rib burger and the cauliflower side dish.

We've now eaten here twice. The food is... good, not great. The service is friendly, and not overplayed. Overall better than most Parisan bistros but... Meh. And at this price, you can do better.
