Introduction

ENGLISH - Born in Rome in 1980, Ivan Ricci is an Italian illustrator and graphic designer. Since he was a child, he displayed a strong flair for drawing but it is during his adolescence, when approaching the manga, that he dedicated himself to studying not only as a graphic designer but also as an illustrator, comic book artist and animator. At the age of 19 he was on a manga course held by Osamu Tezuka’s historic collaborator Yoshiko Watanabe. In 2003 he started working as a freelance artist and in 2004, following his fascination for eastern culture and the Japanese one in particular, he invented the set of that Kawaii-style characters, which would have later become his own pseudonym. They are everyday objects and anthropomorphic animals, designed with plain and round-shaped forms that give the figures a naïve and infant appearance. Indisputable main character and symbol of the whole set is the little blue bear Kawaii Kuma-chan. In 2008 he started taking great interest in paper toys and he first realized custom works based on other artists’ characters, until he eventually created his very first original character, Kikoo the monkey, in 2010, when he also realized a mascot paper toy for the humanitarian organization Smile Train for Haiti. His artworks have been published in various books, among them We Are Paper Toys! published by the American publishing house Collins Design and Papercraft, by the German Gestalten. His Kawaii-style characters also made the front cover of the Italian magazine Computer Arts and a special edition of his Kikoo featured on Computer Arts Portugal
