If you’re going to challenge a decision made by the IRS, the best thing you can do is try to not to take them on alone. Representing yourself and trying to learn everything you need about tax law and IRS regulation may be possible, but it’s far more likely that any holes in your knowledge will make it easy for the IRS to simply have their way. They know the system, you don’t have years of experience navigating it. You can’t expect to become an expert in the short amount of time it takes them to notify you of a problem, and for you to protest their findings.

If for whatever reason, the IRS is now investigating you with the possibility of pursuing criminal charges, an accountant will be of no help at all, and you should seek out a Tax Lawyer immediately. At this point, the matter is not so much about the numbers being processed as it is your legal rights, and a professional knowledge of the law, how it applies to you and how it applies to the IRS. A Tax Attorney can advise you on every step of this process, and what you will be legally required to do on your behalf as well as what options are available to you to protect yourself.

Small businesses often run lean and clean operations, without room for excess and costly mistakes. With about 30 percent of small businesses making less than $10,000 per year, and only four percent of companies making more than one million per year, it's increasingly important that small businesses understand tax issues that can affect their bottom line.
