Kings of France and French Civilisation Course: From Philippe II Auguste to Louis XVI
This course will explore the cultural history of France from the reign of Philippe II Auguste in the late 12th century through to the end of the reign of Louis XVI during the French Revolution. Emphasis will be placed on the outstanding architectural and artistic patronage of the monarchs, which has left such a striking legacy in present-day France.
This legacy includes both sacred and secular buildings and works of art: châteaux, cathedrals, abbeys, churches, palaces, sculptures, and paintings. In addition, there is a vast amount of decorative art in the form of tapestries, furniture, ornaments, and jewellery, as well as landscaped-gardens and parks. The dynastic links of the French royal family will also be studied, as well as the role of influential consorts and mistresses.
