Did Google+ Etiquette Start in a WWI French Hospital?

On Google+, sharing each other's content is encouraged. In fact, not just sharing, but introducing or summarizing the shared content in the form of some commentary is strongly recommended. It helps generate interest and discussion, and helps followers better identify content they may be interested in reading.

While Facebook and LinkedIn both have this same capability from a technical perspective, the practice is far more prevalent here. The thing is though, as a concept, it's almost a century old.

Today's article explores how the events of World War I, and a young man from St. Paul, conspired to create a technique of publication and content creation that is becoming increasingly popular online today: Content Curation.

The result is a technique that truly resonates with readers. By curating great content, you provide value to your followers and position yourself as a resource worth listening to. To get started for your own business or profile, I recommend that you:

1. Create Great Circles - Make sure that you're setting up your circles in an optimum way so that you can put interesting people in them. These people should be ones who are posting and sharing fantastic content that you know you and your followers would be interested in. Set it up right, and all you should have to do is open Google+ and look at your Home stream to see a treasure trove of awesome content to share.

2. Subscribe to RSS Feeds - Use Feedly or HootSuite to subscribe to RSS feeds from industry news sources and influencers, and check them daily for news and articles you can share. Every day I find fantastic articles from thought leaders in my business that I can share to one or more social networks - and of course read myself!

Do you have any content curation tips or techniques of your own to add? What success have you had on Google+ or in your blog with curating content?

Please take a few minutes to read about the birth of content curation, and how it applies to today's marketing environment.

Thanks so much for reading!

In the late 1900's, during World War I, a young American was injured and spent 6 months in a French Hospital. While there, the idea for a magazine was born that may have popularized content curation.
