Sorry.
How do you start a blog post after about 6 months away? Um, I'm back? It's as good a start as any, and I think the coming back is the most important part.  I've finally moved into my own little place (which is neither my own as I a) rent it and b) share it ...

Writing Realities: The Truth About Self-Publishing Book Sales
Image courtesy of Sheela2010 at Free Images I've decided to
address the elephant in the room for most of those interested in
self-publishing: book sales. The rumours around self-publishing sales range from
the extreme of those who published a book and the n...

Creating A Dynamic Story
Conflict Is Always Exciting. Image courtesy of Dave Edmonds at freeimages.com Boring, insipid writing is on the rise. The ease of writing a book on a computer means more people are putting out words which are better left unsaid. Overall, I would much rather...

The Fear and Comfort Of A 90:10 Ratio
Do you ever have those instances where it feels like the universe is ganging up on you to make a point? In the last week someone has been fiddling with my life to teach me the 90:10 Ratio, a rule I wouldn't otherwise subscribe to. It started a few days ago ...

Sample First Episode of Virtually Ideal
Episode 1 Week 1: Monday Monday dawns, as all Melbourne Mondays must, grey and bleak, with just enough rain to soak your feet, but not enough to make an umbrella a worthwhile investment. Curled up under my doona I check the time. 8am. Two hours until I have...

The first review of my 1920's romance, yah!
If you’re a fan of Downton Abbey, then you’ll love this book - I could easily see the characters from the show coming along for the ride as main character Lucinda heads to a s...

Tackling the Unwieldy Task
Virtuall Ideal is done. Well, that is to say, the first draft is complete. That is to say, I have most of the story, from one end to the other, 15 episodes, 200,000 words, even though I've changed bits part way through and know I have to chop/add scenes. No...

The Universal Law of Action and Reaction
How would you react to being punched in the face? (image courtesy of andysteel at Free Images) Newton's third law of motion is that for every action there is always an equal and opposite reaction. This is a physical law of the universe. Unbreakable. Therefo...

The Power Of The Warm-Up
Does anyone else give great advice and then not follow it themselves? Only me? I've been editing my next writing book, The Five Day Writer's Bootcamp , and in it I stress the importance of a writing warm up.  Had I actually been doing writing warm ups mysel...

Cure For Frustration
Over the last few days I've been doing a bit of research into being a literary agent and a book editor. No, not because I'm planning on moving to the other side of publishing. It's research for my serial. Laurie in Virtually Ideal starts off as an unpaid in...

4 Episodes Down and A Side-Thought on Willpower
Hello! Can you believe it, it is week 6 of a 10 week term at school? Over halfway, and counting down til the July holidays. I've spent the past few weeks working on more episodes for my romance serial. Episode 3 took me almost a full two weeks to write. One...

Introduction

I'm a simple girl, with a few too many degrees and a desire to be outrageous: in writing terms at least.

I've started a challenge to try to write 100 first drafts (of novels) in 5 years. Why? First to see if I can. Second, because I can't decide which genre I like best. And third, because I've read that to become an expert at anything takes about 10,000 hours of practice, and there is only one way to practice writing.

I'm not saying I'm going to succeed, but so far in the first six months I've completed my first trilogy, won at NaNoWriMo, and tried writing everything from historical romance to supernatural thriller, with a few children's books thrown in along the way. As well as learning an awful lot about how to write quickly and effectively, and how to just get your backside into a chair and stay there (without a TV).

I maintain one blog on writing which has been going since July 2012, and has some good points on mistakes you now don't have to make because I've already done them for you.

A few months later I started a fitness blog, because I like writing and I like fitness = fitness blog! It looks at different fitness programs and advice then tests out how things actually work for the busy person.

Feel free to drop by either of these for  a cup of tea or a protein shake.
