Last week we saw the wonderful rescue of Raju by Wildlife SOS. He's the elephant who had been enslaved for 50 years to a drug addict in India, that abused and tortured him all those years.
Elephants are incredibly intelligent creatures and its been proven, they also feel emotion. Raju cried tears as he was being rescued. Not only that but he walked into the rescue truck without any coaxing - this was after his owner first barred the road then put extra spiked chains around his already bound feet to make it more painful when they were taken off.
I'm so grateful that Raju is with people who are taking good care of him. For the first time in 50 YEARS he is being fed, bathed and pampered as well as getting medical attention.
One down but hundreds to go.
There are many that need rescuing. The next one should be Mali who has been in a Manila zoo for 36 years. She has never seen another elephant in all that time and has been kept in a tiny enclosure with no room AT ALL to exercise. She's not being cared for properly as seen in the video - she is in pain - also in the 36 years she's been there her caretakers have NEVER done any blood work on her. Manila Mayor is refusing to release Mali because "It would be embarrassing" Apparently he doesn't see that its more embarrassing to keep her there under those horrible conditions. Apparently he doesn't realize that the whole world see what a despicable, self centered jerk he is.
A promise was made in January of this year but to date NOTHING has been done to either treat Mali medically, give her a larger enclosure or bring in other elephants into the zoo. The zoo has refused to take any money from PETA or the individuals capable of donating. We need to put pressure on the Philippine government to release Mali and get her away from those who could care less whether their animals live or die.
