Hi everyone -- I'm in NYC, and I work online to help young people who aren't happy in traditional school pursue connected, self-directed learning.

I didn't learn effectively in traditional school, and growing up with online connectivity, I realized that there must be better ways for education to work than what I was experiencing with traditional schedules, classes, grades, boredom, and forced attendance... and these days, many young people feel the same way, with even more connectivity and content at their fingertips.

I'm a big advocate of self-directed learning centers, like North Star Self-directed Teens and their Liberated Learners model, and schools that are primarily based on learner choice on what and how they learn and spend their time, like Sudbury/democratic schools and Agile Learning Centers. These are all pretty rare, though, so I'm working with +Lisa Cooley on an online self-directed learning program for teens who want to opt out of school and get support in pursuing their interests: http://catalystlearning.net

One of my big personal interests is creating video and doing more writing around the issue of young people who are stuck in ill-fitting school situations and how things can work instead.  So I'm looking forward to diving into CLMOOC and seeing what comes of it!

+Boyinaband is working on his next video, that'll discuss alternatives forms of education.  He's asking for input on this thread, so check it out and comment:

My latest article is part two of an interview with education professor Yong Zhao, this time covering testing and accountability. http://blogs.kqed.org/mindshift/2015/03/how-should-learning-be-assessed/

Are you unhappy in school? Bored, stressed out, anxious?

This recurring hangout will give you the opportunity to talk out your feelings about school, your thoughts about your future, and your ideas about what you could do and learn if you left school.

March 6, 7:00 pm, Google Hangout

You could even invite your parents to the hangout!

Before it starts, give some thought to and maybe jot down some ideas on what you would do if you were able to stop going to school.

From Catalyst Learning Network

Please pass this on to friends who might be interested!

"Mom, Dad, can I stop going to school?"

This post I co-wrote with +Lisa Cooley explains our service Catalyst Learning Network, which provides an online alternative to school that combines #homeschool with online community, mentorship, coaching and a completely personalized, interest-based approach to education.

We also offer educational consulting for those who are unhappy with school and their families.

#clsummer14 is now Catalyst Learning Network

It's been a busy few months for +Lisa Cooley and I.  We're launching an organization and program called Catalyst Learning Network, which is about providing a solution for those who are unhappy in traditional education.

The idea is basically to do what #clsummer14  was intended to be; but do it full-time, not just over a summer.  We've been connecting with lots of people who support the idea, mostly on FB and by email, but we're going to use G+ as a big part of our strategy going forward.

What we do: We'll provide support and learning opportunities for those still in school, but a big part of Catalyst is that we'll work with families to help them find alternatives to school.

Check out our site at http://catalystlearning.net!

21C Literacies: “Mom, Dad, can I stop going to school?”

Those who are familiar with alternative education can find many stories of successful learning beyond school.  But many young people remain in forced-compliance, factory-model schools.
