RECIPE. . .  for a Great Picture Book:
http://utahchildrenswriters.blogspot.com/2011/06/tips-on-writing-picture-books.html
My mother was a great cook. She taught me to use the correct tools when baking, but that occasionally, a well-chosen substitute worked just as well. She advised me to choose fresh ingredients, measure with care, and add each ingredient at the right time. Mix carefully. She said that spices were important little surprises that could make all the difference. Remember to heat the oven so your cake bakes perfectly. Knowing the right moment to take your cake out of the oven is a trick that experience teaches. I have followed her baking advice for many years.

Why am I telling you about cooking? Because my mother's baking rules apply to children's picture books as well as cakes.

Yesterday was a HUGE D-R-A-G. . . I was off line for most of it, hunched over my computer, with Norton in control of it's innards. At first I thought I had a virus - but the Norton dudette said NO!  Still wonder if she was having me on.  Why remove and replace the whole Anti Virus program if nothing was wrong with it?  And several hours of stomping through my Registry?  YIKES!!  She whizzed through files like she invented them.  She said some Microsoft files were corrupted, and that a small program (removed) was in conflict with Norton - yeah, right?  Anyway, it works now, so please all join hands and cross your fingers on my computer's behalf.  PS: I was having no problems until first thing, when I did the usual - turned on Norton for the daily raft of fixes.  Then BLOOEY!  All !@#$ broke out under the hood.  Am I glad yesterday is over :)

Writing a Middle-grade Masterpiece Ain't Easy!
http://hookkidsonreading.blogspot.com/
Like any other job or career, a potential writer must spend time learning the craft of writing for children — an apprenticeship, if you will. The rules are available for those who take the time to learn them. And once you learn the rules, you can take an occasional deep breath. . . and break them with impunity.
