Annual family canoe trip. This year we paddled the White river near Newaygo, MI. This was a slow and for the most part easy float. Those in canoes had a bit of difficulty in some parts.  The riverside lunch break was fun and the river was not too buggy.

This makes my brain so happy especially beginning at 5:30, so mesmerizing I can get so lost in this.

July 5 2015 Canoe Harbor Camp on the South Branch of the Ausable River in Roscommon MI

Did an overnight trip with a couple of friends. A little trout fishing along the way. To quote the Eagles this gave me a "peaceful easy feeling". A pretty easy float, I plan to do this again solo.

Welcome to the community. I will be sharing my outdoor experiences with you through photos, commentary and video.

I am a native Michigander, as a child I recall getting home from school running to the house to change clothes and then venturing into the woods.

I then became an adult and did work things, learned a vocation, became a licensed paramedic and entered a work life. Relationships, family and a daughter came along, then relocating at some point.

I lost my love of the outdoors only to have it reawakened. In my 50's I now enjoy tent camping, hiking, kayaking fishing and hunting. I have an interest in bushcraft and survival.

So I am no expert but I sure do enjoy this beautiful state I live in and want to share it with you.

Your thoughts please... I have never tried a bivy style tent/shelter. I have a 2  person tent (REI Clipper) that weight 5 3/4 pounds. After a short hike fully packed I was spent. Too much weight? Too out of shape? I am now thinking about a s Snugpak Ionosphere but not sure I will like the bivy style. As I try to shed weight, what are your thoughts?

You might wish to take a look at this community (it's not mine) for ideas.

You also might want to ease into this. Lugging stuff around is work. Have you seen your doctor for a check up lately? I carry a weighted bag @ about 10-12 pounds once a week for 3-4 miles and feel stronger and better balanced for it. According to some in the military 40% of your ideal body weight, if your in really good shape, is close to the limit one should carry over extended distances. Good luck.
