"History is the polemics of the victor, William F. Buckley once said. Not so in the United States, at least not regarding the Civil War. As soon as the Confederates laid down their arms, some picked up their pens and began to distort what they had done and why. The resulting mythology took hold of the nation a generation later and persists — which is why a presidential candidate can suggest, as Michele Bachmann did in 2011, that slavery was somehow pro-family and why the public, per the Pew Research Center, believes that the war was fought mainly over states’ rights.

"The Confederates won with the pen (and the noose) what they could not win on the battlefield: the cause of white supremacy and the dominant understanding of what the war was all about. We are still digging ourselves out from under the misinformation they spread, which has manifested in our public monuments and our history books."

Brilliant, hilarious, and a perfect illustration of Scalia's hypocrisy.

Yeah, the guy was an accidental racist who accidentally flew flags of apartheid-era South Africa and white-ruled Rhodesia and accidentally attached a Confederate license plate to the front of his car, accidentally planned this for six months, then accidentally went to the historically black church, then accidentally asked who the pastor was, then accidentally sat next to him, then accidentally listened to and talked to the people there for almost an hour, and then accidentally almost decided not to kill them because they were so nice, and then accidentally decided that no he had to continue his mission, and then accidentally stood up, and then accidentally pulled out his gun, and then accidentally said he was going to shoot black people, and then accidentally shot nine of them. You fucking cabbage.

It's your "heritage?" Your heritage is betraying your country and trying to start a new one based on the ownership of other human beings. Your heritage is shameful. Stop celebrating this part of it.

+Daniel Djang's fantastic article on Silver Lake's The Black Cat and its importance to LGBT civil rights and civil rights in general. Stonewall gets all the attention but the Cat's story needs to be told too, if not more so. "It wasn't a riot, it was a demonstration" and predated Stonewall by over 2 years. I'll bet you didn't know all this local L.A. history -- I didn't.

+Wesly Moore's a star!
5 coolest things at Bar Keeper as shared by cocktail geek +Wesly Moore.

One thing the #SadPuppies  and #RabidPuppies  slate campaigns have succeeded in doing is putting a lot of truly subpar fiction onto the #HugoAwards  ballot. The short fiction ranges from ordinary to dull to execrable.

There is one story from their slate I might have considered voting for -- it was well-written and engaging, but as I saw the ending coming I realized I had already read it in Flowers for Algernon when I was in eighth grade. Points off for lack of originality, but the author is promising. It was good but not Hugo-worthy. If this is what the Puppies think is truly deserving of one science fiction's two highest honors, then they wouldn't know good writing if it bit them in the ass.

PRICELESS. (But perhaps only if you've been following the clusterfrak over this year's #HugoAwards.)
