(it's Megan)
Hey Jank Cast peoples!  I'm working on a new feature for the podcast that will come out as bonus material, hopefully starting next month.  Each week, I'll be talking with a member of the gaming community about how they came to play games, what they love about gaming and the interesting places gaming has taken them.  The goal is to get as many gamers' stories out there and to also show how awesome and diverse our community is.  While designers and other podcasters are certainly welcome to participate, it's my hope to feature lots of folks that aren't usually on the internet radio.

If you're interested in being interviewed for one of these segments, drop me a note below or PM me directly (I'm Megan Pedersen here on the Googles) and we can figure out a time/place/way to set up the interview.  I would prefer to do face to face recordings, but I'm totally willing to do an internet chat if that's the only way to do it.  I'll be at Forge Midwest this weekend, so if you'll be there I will definitely be setting aside some time to talk to folks.  Let's talk about gaming!

Hey all, +Megan Pedersen got interviewed by ConTessa! Check it out!
Say hi, and tell everyone a little about yourself. Hi, everyone!  My name is Megan Pedersen, one of the founding members of Wheel Tree Press, a game design cooperative.  Most folks know me best as one of the hosts of the Jank Cast, a Chicago based podcast on all things gaming.  Some of my game design credits include the theatrical Fiasco playset "Break a Leg" (Bully Pulpit's Playset of the Month, June 2011) and Sparkle, Baby! a freef...

Regarding the reputation of indie gaming, I think that it's a natural part of the lifecycle of any group to grow above a certain size that - in its early years - it has to have a strong sense of identity (such as the Forge provided) to define itself. It also must have individuals who have that missionary zeal I've discovered this wonderful thing, I must share it with others I went through it myself when I first found this kind of gaming. This is clearly better than other kinds of gaming and if I can show it to others they will likewise be convinced of its superiority.

But what happened to me (and what I think is happening to indie gaming) is that my passion matured. I don't carry the message This kind of gaming is better instead it's This kind of gaming is a different kind of fun. I've discovered too much about other kinds of gaming to place empirically one atop the other (the hydra of gaming - many heads, all going back to the same body - makes a lot of sense to me).

I've seen this lifecycle develop at London Indiemeet as well. In the beginning, the founder put in a huge amount of work to get the word out to convince gamers to open up and change how they played, but now we're big enough so that people find us and when they do find us we don't need to convince them to open up (that's the reason they found us) instead we can just show them the fun they can get from this kind of gaming. We even get some folk interested who didn't come up through route of more traditional roleplaying (such as myself).

Todd and Larry also talk about their dissatisfaction with the 'indie' and 'story' as descriptors. I agree, any naming system that requires further explanation is not optimum it's indie in the sense of independently published, but it's not all independently published games it's more about a particular design approach ... it's story in the sense that we're building a story together, but in pretty much all games you create a story together so it's only a small part of those as well

There's also a mention that, in order to communicate across the different gaming 'streams'  we need to develop a common language across the streams. I disagree. And I think +James Stuart  said why best here http://www.story-games.com/forums/discussion/19672/story-games-has-never-been-is-not-currently-and-will-never-be-the-forge

As to what indie gaming can do to improve its reputation, one thing I'm trying to do is to stop judging other people's fun. There are some kinds of gaming that I enjoy and some that are completely lost on me; I cannot understand the fun that people find in them. And yet some folk do. The urge is strong to say Play better games! Here, I've got some! and that's when I remind myself to stop judging other people's fun.

A roundtable discussion podcast mostly about table-top RPG gaming, with some overall nerdishness
Introduction
Welcome to the Jank Cast, a roundtable discussion about gaming and gaming communities.  Our podcast covers experiences at the table, game design and gamer culture.  We play and love a broad variety of games, and we want you to play and love them too.
