That's a lovely studio you have there +Bill Cahill. Thanks for the peek inside.

I can only dream of having something so nice :), but I feel lucky enough to have got a small space in my local town which I'm still working on.

I can't wait to have a space dedicated to shooting again.

Hello, I have some down time so I am exploring a little more of G+. I have had a very good year, and several good things have happened. I had a personal series recognized by both Communication Arts and Graphis magazine. As well as a possible gallery show with an expanded series.

I decided to get back on Google plus, just for the heck of it. I left a few months ago, because I was always asked to give my honest opinion of photography, but what was really wanted was just to say "good job" no matter how bad the project was. Alex Koloskov being the one that always had mediocre to poor examples of product photography, and couldn't believe it when I would say my honest opinion. Some people just don't want to learn. I always cherished critiques when I was learning, and it made me a better photographer. That doesn't seem to be the case these days, everyone just wants a pat on the back. Maybe I should hand out participation trophies .  Good luck, There is lots of work out there these days, I have never been so busy, and cant take on all the projects that have come my way. I would love to see some good work on here, if it exists.

Hi, i am an amateur just starting out in product photography (and photography in general really) and would always value a constructive kick up the backside.
I have just been looking through your images and you have so many crisp clean and frankly stunning product images, i hope to see more of your work.

I have posted this before, and I got yelled at the last time I did, but Ira Glass puts it perfectly into words. What I have noticed is that some people can't tell that their work isn't very good, and there are others who know that their work isn't very good but keep trying. So to put it bluntly, if you are pretty new and can't tell that your work isn't very good, maybe what you are lacking is taste.

Yes. Google plus seems to be one of the worse places to post pictures for critique. I see a lot of very mediocre product photography here, and no one has anything constructive to say. It is a bunch of people patting themselves on their back. I am rarely satisfied with what I produce, and I always push harder.

Certainly to be done properly. I figured the lighting was a key but I thought it would be the lens.

Thanks for the reply. :-)

Someone I know posted a rant about his profession and it completely made sense to me and my profession, photography.

"I'm blown away that people who have no real world experience and no real training are providing services that require such detail and precision are doing a severe disservice to those of us who have the skill and training. "

In photography there are people who know what they are doing and are willing to pass that information on to others. Then there are people who couldn't make it in photography, have no experience or training in photography, yet shout to the heavens of their amazing ability and skill, then charge to pass that information on. This practice sickens me and cheapens our entire profession. People just looking for information on photography don't have the experience to tell the difference between a scam artist and a professional. Then after spending money and wasted time, the amateur will then realize he/she has been wasting their time.
I have been in professional photography for years and have been teaching in my free time for years. I would never charge for that time, its something I do to pay it forward. I have been guest speaker and held demos at photography schools, and have taken interns on who have become successful photographers.
To see people cheapen what I do is an insult to all of photography.

Also wanted to add, you who cheapen our profession know who you are, even if you don't want to admit it to yourself.

I sold my Irish green 68 912 and bought this 67 912. Benton is building a 1.9 twinspark engine for it.
