Posted by Edward Jones, Software Engineer, Google Apps Script and Wesley Chun, Developer Advocate, Google Apps. Have you ever wanted a server API that modifies cells in a Google Sheet, to execute a Google Apps Script app from outside of Google Apps, or a way to use Apps Script as an API platform ...

Hello, Saurabh. I found your Google+ page almost at random. This Execution API looks awesome. I can probably find a way to use it. I work in this general space - I figured out how to use Google Apps Script to front-end Google Cloud products. I wrote a number of articles about this at my blog Bit Vectors

https://bitvectors.blogspot.com

and my latest article about this technique

http://bitvectors.blogspot.com/2015/11/page1.html

went live a few days ago.

Take a look and tell me what you think. Thanks!

Faster html in add-ons.
Apps Script's HTML service is a great way to easily build user interfaces for Docs, Sheets, and Forms add-ons. However, HTML service is S-L-O-W. And until today there have been quite a few restrictions on using HTML service, including the inability to use a variety of JavaScript libraries.

What happens when we call IFRAME mode in non-supported browsers? Will it fall to another sandboxed mode or fail altogether?

(would test myself but am locked with my Chromebook for a few days :))

Docs, Sheets and Forms add-ons now open to all developers

Starting today, any developer can publish an add-on. We can’t wait to see what you will build!

Just a few weeks ago, the Google Sheets team introduced greatly improved control over protected sheets and ranges. Developers have told us they're looking for the same power in Google Apps Script — after all, ever since we added data validation to the Spreadsheet service, programmatic control over protected ranges has been the most popular request on the Apps Script issue tracker.

Today, that control is yours.

With the new Protection class in the Spreadsheet service, your scripts can touch every aspect of range or sheet protection, just like in the new UI.

I've seen many requests in the Docs Help Forum for the ability to create custom paragraph styles. As it was one of my personal top feature requests, I took some time and built a Docs add-on that (in my opinion) makes easier to manage paragraph styles, as well as create new ones (up to six, right now)

If you ever wanted something like this, give the add-on a shot :)

#googledocs   #addon   #ParagraphStyle   #googledrive   #formatting
Manage the formatting of Doc's six default Headings and create your own extra Custom Styles

Finally got around to publishing an add-on of my own: Crop Sheet. I'm a bit of neat freak when it comes to spreadsheets, and tens of empty columns and hundreds of empty rows always kind of bugged me. With a couple clicks you can crop your sheet to just the part that has data in it. The code is open source and hosted on GitHub: https://github.com/erickoledadevrel/crop-sheet/blob/master/Code.js
Provides the ability to quickly remove extra rows and columns from a sheet.

Can't wait to see what get built with time triggers!!

Time-based triggers now in Add-ons

A few weeks ago we announced in a blog post (http://goo.gl/Js3mEH) that add-ons could start using triggers, and those of you with a keen eye may have noticed that time-based triggers were missing from the list. It took a couple of extra days to get those working right, but we're happy to announce that time-based triggers can now be used as well.

Be aware that time-based triggers in add-ons behave differently than those in regular scripts. Most notably, they can only fire at most once an hour. Take a look at our trigger documentation for the full list of caveats.

You can now build add-ons with triggers.

Check out Yet Another Mail Merge and a few others.
Developers told us they were eager to add installable Apps Script triggers to their add-ons. We're happy to announce that now you can do just that.
