Hi guys!

I'm the marketing manager for getrevising.co.uk and I just want to announce our brand new FREE Study Planner.

It helps students manage their deadlines, exams and study time. It also allows them to prioritise tough subjects.

Parents and teachers--it's a massive help to students who, let's say, aren't the best time keepers :).

We're massively proud of it here so let me know what you think :)

Russell on beliefs and clarity in philosophy

I feel like I haven't been getting any fun reading recently (maybe because I've been to busy to catch up on blogs), so I decided to pick up a collection of Bertrand Russell's writings. The collection spans much of his career and both philosophical and more popular writings. It opens with a nice preface by him, that has this gem:

"On a very great many matters my views since I began to write on philosophy have undergone repeated changes. In philosophy, though not in science, there are those who make such changes a matter of reproach. ... I should regard an unchanging system of philosophical doctrines as proof of intellectual stagnation. A prudent man imbued with the scientific spirit will not claim that his present beliefs are wholly true, though he may console himself with the thought that his earlier beliefs were perhaps not wholly false. Philosophical progress seems to me analogous to the gradually increasing clarity of outline of a mountain approached through mist, which is vaguely visible at first, but even at last remains in some degree indistinct. What I have never been able to accept is that the mist itself coveys valuable elements of truth. There are those who think that clarity, because it is difficult and rare, should be suspect. He rejection of this view has been the deepest impulse in all my philosophical work."

The messages remains incredibly relevant, philosophy would be a much more pleasant field if it's practitioners strived for clarity. Also, does anybody feel that if Russell was alive today, he would have an awesome blog?

Great to see two sides of the debate on consciousness.

A neuroscientist puts his view forward and then the philosophers bundle in in the comments section...

Consciousness, awareness, qualia, mind -- call it what you will -- it is the subtle distinction between merely computing information and feeling. #neuroscience #mind #consciousness

If you get the chance, check out one of my school mates on YouTube. He's extremely talented and is trying to make it in the folk music scene!

Really friendly staff and great food. We ordered from the set menu: I had coconut soup and Thai curry. Both were great, but the soup in particular was really tasty. Definitely recommend

We've had a couple of great meals here , but the last few have been pretty awful. Just went for a Sunday Roast and the meal was cold, the beef was tough and the vegetables were unseasoned/bland--and it cost £12! Not impressed. Also, I can't say for sure, but the Yorkshire puddings tasted and looked an awful lot like Aunt Bessies... For drinks this place is great, but really can't recommend the food anymore.

Cool small pub just by the station. The beer is really good, and it has an interesting atmosphere. Only negative point is the musician when we went: he was pretty terrible, although I'm guessing some people probably enjoyed it. Worth a shot for the beer alone

Good curry house on Drummond Street. The curries are pretty tasty--I would've given them a 'very good' if it weren't for the small portions. People that find curry house portions a bit overwhelming might like it though :)

Great Japanese food, pretty similar price to Wagamamas. The service is terrible though--they act as if it's a hassle to have you there. I kind of love it though

Amazing, massive sandwiches for pretty cheap. Tends to be about £2.50-£3.50, made with fresh bread and generous fillings. The only issue is that there tends to be a big queue because their food is that good :)
