DofT's water bomb cube globes, as well as all of his other origami globes, were probably made using a very similar method.  DofT used +Inkscape to produce the template with externally linked graphics then just swapped out the graphics files to produce the various planets.

DofT's globes can be found at http://globes.doft.net/
Designed this in Inkscape! These are pre-printed (see PDF) origami miner game blocks that are easy to cut out and require no glue! Just print and follow the classic instructions for "water bomb".

Try one (or two or a dozen!) today!

If there's interest I'll make more styles!
I used clones and clipping so that the texture will update automatically on all the right origami parts!

DofT has always felt a little bit bad about his balloons littering the country hundreds of miles away. The next balloon will be made out of these compostable bags. That way, if nobody finds the balloon once it lands, it won't just become another bit of plastic that will be out there forever. It will be interesting to see how these bags perform compared to the HDPE bags DofT usually uses.

The balloon that DofT launched a couple of weeks ago was found about 650 miles away in the northeast corner of Oklahoma. Check out the balloon's tracking page at http://solar-balloon-tracking.com/?page=balloon&balloon_id=119

DofT set up his +Raspberry Pi to use the xscreensaver "apple2" so that it would periodically retrieve a quote from +ThinkGeek's fortune file and then display the current unix time.

This quote happened to come up this morning as DofT was getting ready for his day job: "I've figured it out. The guys at think geek are just sitting around laughing as they watch people just continuously refresh and never find their own quote."

DofT has finished converting the little computer shaped coin bank into an actual computer. This video shows a short demonstration of the computer in action.

Now DofT has to come up with some actual use for this adorable little machine.

DofT sometimes gets distracted by life and shiny things. This morning, he stopped to hang out with a snail for a little while before work.

DofT just got the screen a couple of days earlier than he was expecting it and set about dismantling it and integrating it into the computer shaped coin bank that he had converted into a case for a Raspberry Pi. He will be adding a better power supply as soon as those parts arrive.

So this guy went and reverse engineered DofT's 14 point star and built a very tiny one. Not a bad rendering at all considering the scale.

This week is Spring Break for DofT's kidlings. They wanted to learn to make roses, but DofT suggested they start with something a bit easier to start out so he taught them fortune tellers and star boxes. Meanwhile, he put together a modular dodecahedron globe. Clearly the world doesn't quite fit inside the star box but it does make a nice display.
