Twitter doesn't care what your real name is. Let's go simple, I Know You regardless of where you are, who you are with, what you are wearing, etc. That's Life 1.0, build it the same way.

On the other hand, Twitter cares about the information you relate with for monetization purposes. The author says "The social web is about reputation and influence, not necessarily names." That may be the definition of Social Web 1.0 but the next social web will be more about relationships and engagement. For this, names are not necessary but identity is. Reputation and influence scores like Klout are not important, they are merely techniques for marketing. I value the symmetric followers, especially those that begin to converse and engage with you. Here is where identity matters and the best system will be one where identity is not even a question.

Why does Twitter allow users to have pseudonyms, while Google and Facebook require real names? Because Twitter realizes it can provide plenty of value for both users and advertisers without having to ...

Ok, its a little bit funny, it's the Onion after all:

"According to White House officials, Obama attempted to work with Republicans right up until the Aug. 4 deadline, but was ultimately left with no choice except to turn a year older"

NYT article on the continuing tensions between Twitter and 3rd party developers,
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/07/18/technology/twitter-and-app-makers-feel-growing-pains.html

In the 2010 developer conference, Twitter was repeatedly asked for their development roadmap. I think many developers were ready and eager to retool and switch into product areas that Twitter was not interested in leading in. At that time they released an informal description of areas that they would be pursuing. They talked about streams, annotations, etc. A year later, just before SXSW 2011, Twitter was more specific in areas that were off limits: Twitter clients and the presentation of tweets. I would also be concerned if I was working on analytics and multi-media. Once again, the tension is that 3rd party developers are willing to work with Twitter but they need their leadership. Not much progress in one year.

I still feel Twitter is an important platform for 3rd party developers but there are others that will allow the growth of social-ware apps.
A boom in apps has fed longstanding tensions between Twitter and the developers over whether they are partners or competitors.

Nice photo! I laughed at your consumption comment -- over the past year we've been shifting to be weekday vegetarians. I'm planning on doing a visual story about it, so I photograph a lot of our meals before we eat them (much to my husband's amusement/annoyance as he waits for me to finish the picture taking!)

Always interesting William Gibson in an interview about his novel 'Zero History'. The interview is old but it's what he says about Twitter and it's minimalist implementation that I found interesting. I agree that Twitter, unlike Facebook, G+, and others, does not try to deliver any specific experience. This is why it has always been more attractive to me.

The drought conditions and heat in Texas are making insects behave in a surprising fashion. Outside in the yard, I went to water some potted plants. I adjusted the hose to release a low pressure stream when immediately I was surrounded by bees, wasps, and beetles. Now, I'm normally not creeped out by insects so my initial reaction was mild compared to most, I stayed calm and still. It was immediately obvious that I would suffer no harm and watched how they flew around the hose, stream, and my hand, acquiring moisture from the air and from barely visible droplets on metal and skin. I decided to slowly complete the chore, accompanied throughout by my halo of thirsty insects.

Later I wondered if they possess a marvelous humidity sensor or they simply have learned to interpret my behavior. Either way, it was a moment.
